Position Details:Summary of Duties:Responsible for the outreach, development and management of pre-health and health pathways, and visitation programs of Native Americans and non-Native students for the Health Sciences programs. Plans, develops, implements, and evaluates new and existing health pathway programs and events to bring attention to the various Health Sciences programs. Works with tribal communities, junior high and high schools, and other higher education institution partners to present WSU Health Sciences and WSU NAHS programming to future students. Will identify and develop relationships with potential students and encourage family and community involvement. Plans age/group appropriate visitation programs and workshops at the Center for Native American Health, online, or in other outlying areas. Attends and presents information to tribal communities at various venues located in the region. Creates and develops marketing and communications plans, social media program updates, and helps lead the Native American Health Sciences student club on the Spokane campus.
This position provides admissions advising/counseling to Native American students and parents and supports incoming and current students, as well as supports the learning of non-Native students.
Essential Duties: Recruitment, Outreach, and Visitation Coordination: 45%
- Serves as the Native American Outreach representative for WSU Health Sciences | Spokane student recruitment for Health Sciences. Coordinates the recruitment efforts of Native Americans for each of the Colleges on the Spokane campus.
- Coordinates and participates in recruitment programs for Native American middle school, high school, community or tribal colleges, undergraduate, and re-entry students interested in undergraduate and graduate health sciences degrees.
- Participates in tribal and urban Native American community events to build WSU's contacts and relationships in Native communities.
- Collaborates with other WSU campus locations to ensure that recruiting efforts are not being duplicated or are interfering with other recruitment efforts. Builds relationships with other campus locations and shares recruiting ideas and programs that have been successful for Native Americans.
- Establishes and maintains close working relationships with a variety of student affairs, enrollment, and academic faculty and staff who work directly with students.
- Develops and cultivates relationships with key area community college personnel, area college/universities, high school counselors/teachers, career specialists, and community programs such as Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) and Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement (MESA).
- Develops and cultivates relationships with key Native American club advisers and/or counselors in Native American programs in area community colleges and area college/universities.
- Develops and cultivates relationships with Native American alumni and other useful contacts.
- Develops admissions programming to present information at various venues about academic, career, and financial aid opportunities on our campus to future students.
- Initiates, coordinates, and implements various programs and services to support and facilitate existing Native American WSU students, community college students, college transfers, and college graduates in applying to WSU Spokane health sciences programs and in their successful transfer to campus.
- Develops recruitment presentation to be used in high schools, community colleges, and tribal and urban Native American community events communities and other venues as needed.
- Administers, promotes and evaluates local recruiting fairs and college visits specifically focusing on Native Americans.
- Collaborates with staff, faculty, and current students in all academic programs to promote, implement, and evaluate campus programs and services for prospective Native American students. Programs include campus visitation events, counselor/teacher events, various workshops, diversity committees, and group and individual campus visits.
Student/Participant Retention and Advising: 30%
- Maintains current databases of current Native American health science students, alumni, tribal contacts, school contacts, professional networks, potential students, and the Native American Health Sciences Tribal Advisory Board.
- Tracks students participating in early outreach and pathway programs from first contact through recruitment process, and post-graduation.
- Collaborates with programs across the WSU system to work with Native American students in pre-health majors.
- Schedules high school and community college visits and other events. Follow up on questions, phone calls, travel logs, and emails.
- Organizes retention activities and programs focused on Native American students and strengthening student community.
- Collaborates with the Colleges and tribal communities, to create visitation programs that will excite young students to consider a future education in the health sciences.
- Collaborates with the Student Diversity Center to organize diversity and educational activities and events on campus to enhance the campus climate for retention.
- Collaborates with Student Affairs staff to maintain current information to share with students, and to plan recruitment procedures, and retention programs.
- Disseminates information on Health Sciences and Native American Health Science activities to students and other groups.
- Advises high school students regarding educational opportunities for Health Sciences academic programs. Inform students of WSU and WSUS resources. Make referrals as needed.
- Advises community college transfer students regarding transferable courses. Inform students of WSUS resources. Make referrals as needed.
- Advises college graduates regarding requirements and additional course work if any. Inform students of WSUS resources. Make referrals as needed.
- Advises students regarding scholarship and loan repayment options.
- Advises the Native American Health Sciences student club on the Spokane campus.
Program Planning: 20%
- Under the direction of the Assistant Director of NAHS Programs and Student Services works in the planning and implementation of a strategic outreach and pathways plan.
- Assists the Assistant Director of NAHS Programs and Student Services in developing a strategic plan for Native American outreach and pathway programs responsive to the tribes in the region and regional urban Native American students establishing a visitation program for middle and high school students interested in health science programs.
- Develops, implements, assesses, and evaluates programs and services for Native American programs.
- Researches and writes grants and reports related to Native American outreach, pathway programs, to include Na'ha'shnee Summer Institute.
Other: 5%

Required Qualifications:Positions require a Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of professional work experience in student services or related education/experience. A Master's degree in a related field may substitute for one (1) year of professional work experience. Any combination of relevant education and professional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Additional Requirements:- Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated experience speaking in front of large groups.
- Demonstrated experience in program planning and administration.
- Experience with MS Office Suite, including Word, Access, Excel, Outlook, and Internet.
- Must have or be able to obtain a valid unrestricted driver's license at time of hire.
- Ability to travel and to work some weekends and evenings.
Preferred Qualifications:- Master's degree in related field.
- Demonstrated experience and involvement in successfully working and communicating with Native American/Alaska Native populations.
- Knowledge of tribal community educational needs.
- Experience with student information systems.
- Knowledge of student recruitment and college admissions.
- Knowledge of admissions procedures, academic programs, financial aid and scholarships.
- Knowledge of Washington State University programs, policies and procedures.
- Experience with event planning/programs for student organizations.
- Experience with marketing and communications.
