Department Overview
This position supports the academic mission of the school, which includes administrative support in the areas of student recruitment and retention of underrepresented and disadvantaged students and fostering an inclusive campus climate. This position supports the campus/program in furthering and strengthening OHSU and the SON strategic diversity initiatives. This position is a point of contact for current students, or prospective students when referred by Admissions, and collaborates with academic and community partners related to outreach and student recruitment, particularly at directing outreach efforts aimed at disadvantaged student populations. This position also mentors student members, and supports collaboration among internal and external stakeholders to support an inclusive campus climate and retention of a diverse student body.
Function/Duties of Position
1. Student Recruitment and Retention Support (50% of duties)
- Organizes and participates in student career exploration and informational sessions within the local community, with a focus on diversity and disadvantaged students.
- Supports mentoring and monitors diverse, underrepresented economically and educationally disadvantaged students each quarter regarding progress toward program completion requirements: including
- Referral of students to resources as appropriate for student success, such as host campus resources, faculty, and other OHSU units including Center for Diversity and Inclusion, Financial Aid, Financial planning, Student Affairs Associate, Student Access, Learning Support.
- Communicates academic and student policies and procedures to students to help clarify student requirements, next steps, and ensure a smooth transition through the program.
- Communicates and/or coordinates events and opportunities to students to promote student engagement.
- Is staff support for diversity-related student groups on campus.
- Participates in a comprehensive program of orientation and supplemental support for new students, including
- Helps students identify scholarship opportunities and build and submit competitive scholarship application.
- Assists with mock interviews as directed by Campus Associate Deans.
- Mentors students with a focus on first generation and underrepresented students.
2. Public Relations & Administrative (50% of duties)
- Organizes and participates in monthly, quarterly and/or annual campus events in collaboration with Center for Diversity and Inclusion, community partners, admissions office and the host campus including, informational sessions and orientation.
- Serves as an inclusion champion for assigned unit, supporting the OHSU diversity mission and strategic initiatives.
- Fosters community and facilitates communication among students and has an active understanding of current student climate and issues.
- Functions effectively and respectfully within the context of varying cultural beliefs, behaviors, and backgrounds and is aware and can speak knowledgeably about the university wide diversity plan, OHSU strategic diversity initiatives, and the SoN mission related to diversity.
- Meets and greets college administrators, faculty and students daily and maintains a cordial and welcoming environment.
- Networks with and participates in workgroups or committees related to diversity, equity and inclusion at the OHSU, SON, and host campus level.
- Participates as requested in reviewing and scoring nursing student scholarship applications and offering recommendations for selection.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities to support the goals of diversity and inclusion as directed by the Senior Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Diversity.
Required Qualifications
Education: Four years of general office or secretarial experience; OR
An Associate's degree or certificate in office occupations or office technology and two years of general office or secretarial experience; OR
A Bachelor's degree and two years of general office or secretarial experience; OR
An equivalent combination of training and experience.
Experience: At least one year counseling and/or providing case management for under-resourced or underrepresented populations.
Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies): Working familiarity with Microsoft Office products.
Preferred Qualifications
Education: Bachelors or Master's Degree in student services or related major
Experience: At least one year providing counseling and/or case management of health professions students.
At least one year counseling and/or providing case management for disadvantaged or minority college/university students.
Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies): Data management
Bilingual/fluent in Spanish
Strong ties/relationships with local underrepresented communities
Additional Details
Working Conditions: Requires travel locally, regionally, and nationally for recruitment and retention activities. Flexible work schedule with some weekends and/or evenings. Some telework may be possible.
Physical Demands & Equipment Usage: Ability to sit at a computer work station for long hours.
