Germanna Community College is a public, open access institution of higher education in the Virginia Community College System. Full of history, the area offers a community rich with diversity, the arts, technology, vineyards, hiking, canoeing/kayaking and many other activities.Germanna is currently seeking an Academic Advisor for Equity Advancement as part of its Title III: Strengthening Institutions program. The primary purpose of this position is to provide academic and advising support to underrepresented minority and low-income students, using a case management approach. In addition to providing comprehensive academic advising services for Germanna students, the Academic Advisor for Equity Advancement serves as an advocate promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion across the College and throughout the campus community. This Advisor will promote academic achievement and expand non-academic resource availability. This position will work closely with students through their academic journeys, be proactive in supporting studentsâ™ needs and assisting with academic interventions when necessary. Ideal candidates are passionate about increasing student performance, retention and success; appreciate the role diversity and identity plays in achieving learning outcomes; and value inclusivity in all advising interactions among students, faculty and staff. This classified full-time position with benefits is grant funded and supported through September 30, 2026.Major Duties and Responsibilities:· Serve in an advising capacity and support to discuss career, educational and future learning goals with students· Facilitate a collaborative space that supports students from underrepresented and marginalized communities· Maintain records of advising sessions and student performance, and providing academic-related support services· Provide confidential advisory support for students and serve as liaison between students and College resources that support learning equity such as counselors or tutors· Collaborate with Care Team and Counseling Services to identify and implement intervention strategies for at-risk student populations including use of a student early alert software program for case load management· Provide student support and academic advising for students in the Gladys P. Todd Academy (GPTA) and Germanna Scholars· Assist with co-curricular programming such as Spring and Fall Welcome Day programs, academic advising and recruitment programming, and equity advancement programming as needed· Demonstrate a strong understanding of institutional policies particularly related to student enrollment, retention, and completion· Support the goals, activities, and objectives of the GCCâ™s Title III Strengthening Institution program grantEmployees must be able to work strategically with diverse colleagues, students, and community members with a commitment to diversity as a learning outcome to be culturally respectful, professionally competent, and civically responsible.This is a full-time restricted position with full state benefits that will continue until September 30, 2026.Diversity, equity, and inclusion are core values of Germanna Community College. [email protected] · Bachelor's degree or equivalent in related field or related experience, minimum of three (3) years of experience working with college students from different cultural heritages and identities· Experience offering academic and career guidance to students, thereby helping them choose a career path.· Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion including demonstrated experience developing and managing recruitment and/or retention-based programs for historically underrepresented and marginalized students· Training in advising and related student services for undergraduates in all majors in the College and experience with identifying educational challenges and barriers faced by historically underrepresented and marginalized students· Experience coordinating advising and programs supporting student retention, including proactive outreach and support to targeted student populations who do not meet established benchmarks or are considered academically at-risk.· Knowledge of retention strategies and data-driven methods of identifying students who may be at risk of not continuing their education.· Ability to plan, develop, coordinate, supervise, and organize programs, activities, and groups.
