This position provides full time nine months (1.0 FTE, 9 months) retention-focused services for eligible low-income first generation students according to Student Support Services (SSS) grant stipulations such that they achieve persistence and graduation rates comparable to LMU students who are not SSS eligible. The position oversees the tutor coordination for the Ignacio project. The position reports to the Director of the Student Support Services (SSS TRIO) Grant-Ignacio Program.
POSITION SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Be responsible for 50 student cases.
- Coordinates all aspects of the tutoring program, including tutor recruitment, training, and supervision and tutor program evaluation.
- Offer proactive academic advising and monitoring, including personal academic and career advising and other retention focused services
- Supply federal student financial aid advising, assistance completing the FAFSA, finding private and public scholarships, financial literacy education, and financial planning for postsecondary education (CPP2).
- Advise on graduate and professional school selection and enrollment assistance.
- Supply a robust program of career engagement and preparation (CCP1).
- Provide personal counseling and referrals to campus resources as needed.
- Assist offering annual cultural events.
- Collaborate with other units on campus and other student support services offices and programs, including McNair and Upward Bound.
- Perform other duties as assigned or requested.
EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
- Typically a Master's Degree in education, educational psychology, student personnel administration, or related field or equivalent experience. Incumbent will be expected to continue upgrading knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to keep abreast of regulation/policy changes.
- Minimum 2 years experience teaching at a high school or community college and/or working in an educational or human services setting with SSS eligible students.
- At least 1 year providing academic advising or other retention focused services to SSS eligible students at the post-secondary level.
- At least 1 year tutoring or supervising tutors at the high school or college level.
- Minimum 2 years providing academic advising, financial aid advising, and career guidance and related services to SSS eligible students at the post-secondary level experience in progressively responsible positions.
- Minimum at least 2 years' experience providing counseling services to students from low income, first generation backgrounds or students with disabilities at the post-secondary level
- Demonstrated knowledge in the areas of: counseling, academic and financial aid advising and career guidance
- Exemplary communication skills (both written and oral) evidenced by background in preparing comprehensive reports and executive summaries incorporating complex, highly technical information.
- Highly developed organizational and leadership skills.
- Demonstrated computer competency and preferably knowledgeable of relevant systems, such as Blumen.
REQUIRED EDUCATION:
