Overview This Library Assistant 3 position provides student supervision, access services, and program support. Its primary focuses are onsite student supervision, service desk, reference, and other programmatic support services for the St. Paul Campus Libraries (Magrath Library and Natural Resources Library). The incumbent in this position works closely with St. Paul Access Services staff and Physical and Biological Sciences liaisons to contribute to the overall goals of the University of Minnesota Libraries, and has responsibility for student staffing of Magrath Library and the Natural Resources Library.
Student supervision 45% (18 hours/week)
Hire, train and supervise students workers for multiple functions/locations
Assists in the creation and updating of training materials and other documentation for students.
Develops, coordinates and delivers system-wide and customized training for student staff in functions common to all locations (e.g., customer service training, shelving, basic circulation duties). Develops training tools and documentation using multiple methods of delivery (online, in-person, etc)
Prepares student payroll documents and monitors student payroll budget.
Prepares work schedules and manages schedules
Works with students to improve performance; resolves student personnel problems.
Conducts annual performance reviews for student staff.
Develops effective communication mechanisms to ensure that students are aware of changes in policies and procedures.
Develop and update student documentation and procedures for functional areas. Make procedures available via web/wiki.
Information and Access Services 25% (10 hours/week)
Staff the information services desk, providing reference, information and access services that require judgment and informed appraisal of the user’s needs, based on thorough working knowledge of relevant library policies, procedures, tools and facilities.
Serves as a front-line staff for digital information services, answering questions in the campus-wide chat, email queues, and making referrals as appropriate.
Instructs/assists users in use of online and print materials. Provides instruction in effective database search skills; beginning and advanced Boolean searching, truncation etc.
Continuously develops skills related to subject and new collections/materials/eresources.
Instructs users on library equipment and technology. Contacts vendors and UCard office to resolve service related issues.
Coordinates maintenance and repair of library equipment and facilities, in cooperation with Information Technology Services and facilities staff. Communicates with users to follow up when necessary.
Helps other library units with user support needs and related training as assigned.
Maintains an informational connection with security staff; communicates problems, issues and concerns on a day-to-day basis.
Coordinates the collection, analysis and reporting of statistics related to functional work. Creates informational charts and prepares reports; shares with appropriate library departments and staff.
Coordinates Public Workstation Access Services, and resolves related issues.
Supports and provides leadership and recommendations on selection or deselection and/or management of materials for print and online reference collection.
Department and Committee Work 15% (6 hours/week)
Contributes to committees or working groups at a high level of expertise or working knowledge
Coordinates the collection, analysis and reporting of statistics related to functional work.
Coordinates system-wide System Cleanup Reports.
Creates, monitors and updates documentation for Department functions.
Processes poster printing requests
Resolves reports (e.g. Item Process Status)
Student Success and Research Support 10% (4 hours/week)
Coordinates work on special departmental/liaison programs, projects, and events.
Creates and maintains signs, displays, posters and brochures for liaison colleagues or groups (committees, conferences, etc.).
Assists with the development of and maintains guides, Library Course Pages, handouts, print publications, etc.
Creates and maintains both print and online instructional aides including FAQ, website updates, libdata/LCP to help users navigate collections.
Using specialized knowledge of collections and/or topics assists in planning preparation, and logistical support for events and exhibits
Project and Event Management 5% (2 hours/week)
Manages the daily operations for project work
Identifies and communicates information about potential problem areas.
Works with Manager to identify, recommend, and implement changes in the work plan to resolve identified problems.
Manages project deliverables to ensure productivity and quality standards.

College education can be substituted for library or research experience on a year for year basis up to three (3) years plus two years of relevant library experience and/or five (5) years of relevant library or research experience.
Strong interpersonal skills including commitment to fostering diversity in the workplace
Experience providing reference or research assistance.
Strong commitment to providing excellent customer service.
Effective verbal and written communication skills; comfortable with public speaking in front of workshop and class groups.
Minimum of one year supervision (can include student supervising)
Demonstrated ability to work in a highly collaborative organizational environment.
Experience with integrated library systems.
Experience supporting accessibility to print and electronic information resources.
Ability to lead, manage, and successfully complete multiple assignments.
