Component instructors have responsibility for teaching a defined unit or component of a course in the Pathways program for precollege (academically advanced high school) students, developed in collaboration with the Summer Session Office and one or more other component instructors for the course. These courses are designed specifically for academically advanced high school students ready to tackle undergraduate-level material and assignments; they provide a broad overview of a particular field of study, delving into a variety of perspectives and topics.
Pathways courses are taught in an intensive, condensed format. In summer 2020, these courses will be taught remotely, in a mix of synchronous and asynchronous activities to take place Monday through Friday over 3 weeks. Different components of the course are taught by different instructors, and compensation is prorated accordingly (for example, three instructors might each teach their own independent one-week unit of a three-week long course).
Offer contingent on successful completion of a background check. All instructors must also complete mandatory annual training on Minors on Campus Policy compliance.
Planning and executing experiential learning opportunities, such as field trips, guest speakers, labs, field work, and other interactive, creative activities, including arranging any student safety training necessary for lab work (Summer Session Office provides logistical support for matters such as transportation and payment of speaker fees)
Developing and distributing a syllabus that clearly states the objectives of the course, the requirements that students will be expected to fulfill, and the basis on which they will be graded, in collaboration with the other co-instructors, to be filed with the Summer Session Office prior to the start of the quarter
Preparing all course materials (e.g., ordering books and supplies, including desk copies for course assistants; creating the Canvas site) in advance of the beginning of the quarter, in collaboration with other co-instructors
Coordination among all co-instructors to ensure a coherent, cohesive classroom experience for students throughout the course
Daily coordination with teaching assistant(s) for delivery of any additional instruction and assignments, including guidance on lesson planning and activities
Adhering to and announcing the University's and Summer Session Office's policies on grading, attendance, class participation, and academic misconduct
Preparing for and meeting all scheduled class sessions (including chaperoning field trips)
Maintaining regular office hours (one to two hours per week)
Grading and commenting on papers, examinations, and other assignments given as part of the component for which you are responsible in a timely manner and submitting final quarter grades by the Registrar's published deadline
Participating in any meetings organized by the Summer Session Office
Consulting on student course placement, as necessary
Bringing to the attention of Summer Session staff any matters related to student attendance, progress, or other areas of concern
Completion of mandatory annual training on Minors on Campus Policy compliance
Required skills and abilities:
Documented excellence in pedagogy and course content
Willingness to learn and adhere to Summer Session and UChicago policies
Experience and education:
Bachelor's degree required
Master's degree or Ph.D. in course-related field strongly preferred
Prior teaching experience at the university or four-year college level required; experience teaching as a primary instructor is preferred, but not required.
Previous experience working with high school students or in an intensive summer program preferred, but not required
