About the Opportunity: Global Experience Office Overview: The Global Experience Office (GEO) is a central office of global education at Northeastern University, committed to ensuring that every Northeastern student has an opportunity to engage in intellectually challenging and culturally enriching experiences throughout the world. To achieve this, GEO partners with Northeastern colleges and units to integrate meaningful global experiences into their curricula and to enhance their capacity through global mobility. Northeastern's signature programs, including Dialogue of Civilizations, Global Engagement Program, Global Quest, the N.U.in Program, and Semester-In, are carefully designed to reflect the Northeastern University (NU) global mission, complement students' on-campus studies, deepen students' knowledge of the world and their chosen field of study, and help students develop intercultural and political sensitivity, utilize and strengthen foreign language skills, explore global career options, and grow as individuals. Through these programs, GEO facilitates global experiences for over 3,800 NU students and 200 additional foreign incoming students.
Responsibilities: Reporting to the Director of Global Experience Advising, and working collaboratively with all units within the Global Experience Office, the Associate Director of Advising assists in leading the development, implementation, continuous improvement, and assessment of strategies and programs aimed to attract and enroll students in global experiences in line with GEO's mission and the University's strategic goals, and ensures adherence to University policies and best practice in experiential education and student health and safety.
The Associate Director supports GEO's comprehensive advising services, maintains accountability for the division to the Director, and ensures quality and consistency of advising and communication with students, parents, and other constituents. This position assists with the coherence of GEO's promotional, application, and pre-departure materials, and maintains expertise in global higher education systems, overseeing a portfolio of programs and ensuring student compliance with registration and transfer credit requirements.
The Associate Director provides leadership to the division's comprehensive advising cycle, and supervises a team of Assistant Directors to ensure quality and consistent advising practice. The position works collaboratively with leadership to enhance and create innovative strategies for global experience advising, provides input into the admissions process, monitors enrollment. The Associate Director interfaces with a variety of GEO stakeholders, domestic and international, NU and non-NU entities and actively engages, liaises with, and responds to academic advising departments and global co-op faculty to ensure GEO and GSSAC policies and processes are being communicated accurately, understood and followed.
The Associate Director is expected to travel domestically and internationally, conduct site visits, present at conferences and meetings, and represent Northeastern's Global Experience Office in a positive and professional manner.
Qualifications: Master's degree, 6+ years of experience within higher education, and 2+ years of leadership and/or staff supervision required. Experience working with study abroad and/or J-1 exchange programs strongly preferred. Must have previous experience studying abroad at the undergraduate level or time living abroad, and demonstrate a commitment to international education and the promotion of cross-cultural understanding and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. Must have working knowledge of the standards of best practice and professional ethics as outlined by the Forum on Education Abroad and NAFSA: Association of International Educators. Familiarity with international political, social and cultural issues as they pertain to education abroad, international travel, and international experiential education, and knowledge of principles and issues of study abroad advising. Strong oral and written communication to positively engage people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, and excellent problem-solving and analytical skills with proven ability to strategize, prioritize and multi-taskk to meet goals and deadlines is essential. Strong interpersonal skills, sufficient to inspire others and work effectively and collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders, including professionalism and collegiality in a team environment, excellent judgement, discretion, and the ability to make decisions in a timely manner. Must effectively represent the University to outside institutions and universities, including global program respresentatives, in a highly professional manner with an understanding of of protocol and confidentiality. Strong organizational, project management, administrative, and computer skills required, particularly in Excel and Microsoft Office. Familiarity with Terra Dotta, Salesforce, and student record systems (e.g., Banner) strongly preferred. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
