Duties & Responsibilities:
Administrative
Develop, implement, and maintain appropriate policies related to military-connected students on campus and military relations.
Supervise Assistant Director and other VA Certifying Official(s) to ensure compliance with federal and state requirements.
Manage budget allocations
Manage and monitor the daily operations of the Military and Veterans Center; develop and implement policies and procedures; manage budget allocation.
Work with the Assistant Director to staff to hire, train, and supervise VA student employees that assist in operation of the Military and Veterans Center in compliance with standards.
In conjunction with Institutional Research & Planning, monitor statistics and data related to military-connected students at USD and national trends.
Analyze and interpret new/pending legislation and information from the Veterans Administration pertaining to veteran educational benefits.
Maintain knowledge of university policies and convey this information to military- connected students.
Monitor, research, and conduct in-depth analysis of like organizations and current studies in order to stay abreast and up to date on themes and actions related to student veterans and military-connected students in higher education
Provide training and assistance to campus departments on veteran and military issues, this includes but is not limited to coordinator/facilitation of the Military Ally program.
Without precedence, plan, develop and conduct other related instructional sessions, courses and/or seminars.
Without precedence, independently create briefs, travel to, and present at events with the intention of educating and advocating for student veterans and military-connected students in higher education. These events can include but are not limited to educational events on best practices, student veteran programs, transition issues, and more.
Evaluate, analyze, and adjust as needed social media, web presence, and other medias in order to maintain an image appropriate for university and program.
Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Student Advising and Support
Develop a relationship of trust with military-connected students that provides an open environment and encourages communication. This includes maintaining a welcoming and inclusive environment within the Military and Veterans Center.
Must be familiar with student degree plans, major, minor and core requirements, and be able to effectively and accurately advise students related to their academic courses.
Must be familiar with Veteran Affairs and Department of Defense education opportunities that support military and veteran students to include GI Bill, Vocational Rehabilitation, Tuition Assistance, Skillbridge Programs, etc. to effectively advise students
Provide regular opportunities for the military-connected community (students, faculty and staff) to gather and share successes and challenges.
Supervise the development, implementation, and management of university-wide programming and events for veteran and military-connected students, including orientation programs, lunch and learns, and other activities designed to support military- connected students.
Serve as a general resource and advisor to military connected students.
Serves as the advisor to the Student Veterans Organization.
Inform and encourage students to participate in leadership development opportunities for military-connected students at the local, regional, and national level.
Maintain regular communication with all undergraduate and graduate military-connected students through a variety of communications methods including social media and other collaborative efforts.
Serves as primary point of contact for military-connected students (currently 668), staff, administrators and faculty in relation to military-connected services at USD.
Identify, create, and enhance initiatives that improve military-connected students' academic and co-curricular experiences at USD.
Establish and maintain a database of community support resources for veterans and military connected students regarding all aspects of academic, personal, and professional well-being.
Recruitment and Transition
Using advanced interpersonal skills, efficiently and independently evaluate complex and unique circumstances of military-connected prospective students.
Without precedence and within parameters, use creativity to provide timely, appropriate, and comprehensive advice, guidance, and recommendations toward access and success at USD or other institutions of higher education.
Respond accurately and quickly to incoming, worldwide emails and phone calls from active duty military, spouses, and veterans interested in attending the University of San Diego.
Establish a visible presence on local military bases and with local and national military related organizations as a representative of USD and the Military and Veterans Program.
Meet with potential students and educate them on admission criteria, application opportunities, routes of admission, and programing available at USD for military- connected students.
Using sound judgment independently seek out, vet, coordinate, establish, and maintain communication networks across organizational lines with appropriate institutions and representatives.
Work collaboratively with the Offices of Graduate and Undergraduate Admissions, Schools and the College on military-connected student recruiting initiatives.
Leadership:
Account for university strategic plan, mission, and values in conjunction with the Military and Veterans' Program mission and implement appropriate planning and actions.
Act as primary ambassador of the USD Military and Veterans Program to external agencies throughout San Diego and beyond.
Represent USD in local, state, and national professional organizations and establish working relationships with these organizations.
Serve on University committees related to military-connected students as assigned.
Serve as the persistence response team representative for military-connected students.
Create, attend, maintain, and coordinate external military advisory council consisting of community leaders interested in supporting military-connected students.
Create, attend, maintain, and coordinate internal military advisory council consisting of university leaders.
Support and actively participate in university development in support of the Military and Veterans Program.
Leads the internal Military Advisory Council, comprised of university leadership and representatives across multiple offices in an effort to improve services for student veterans and dependents.
Career Development
Maintain and seek out information about and communicate to military-connected students the services available to veterans in the San Diego area.
Collaborate with the Career Development Center as appropriate.
Seek out and coordinate with community professionals seeking to employ military- connected students and graduates with the intention of developing and filling internship and job opportunities.
Seek out and establish mentorship opportunities for military-connected students with local professional and industry leaders.
Work collaboratively with Alumni Relations to support and maintain relationships with Alumni.
Create opportunities that assist with the articulation of military knowledge, skills, and abilities for career pursuit of students.
Other
Contribute to or lead additional division/campus projects outside of typical duties to help further accomplish student success or organizational goals. Additional assignments may be seasonal, ad hoc or ongoing, depending on the project.
Minimum Qualifications:
Excellent student support skills including, but not limited to, listening, oral communication, empathy, and problem solving.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Experience with military/veteran community, including working knowledge of VA benefit and certification processes.
Ability to present information effectively to senior management, public groups, and/or board of directors.
Evidence of leadership abilities.
Must support and represent the mission of USD and demonstrate the culture of care.
Preferred Qualifications:
Counseling, advising, or coaching experience.
Knowledge of various higher education models.
Knowledge of Veteran Administration policies and benefits applicable to veteran
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Salesforce, and other applications such as Banner and VA Once.
Knowledge of financial aid procedures.
Experience managing multiple programs simultaneously.
Evaluation and assessment experience.
Experience supervising both professional and student staff members.
Public speaking experience.
Performance Expectations - Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Demonstrated commitment to student learning and development in the co-curriculum and experience assessing the impact of programs and related services. Language would be used if appropriate to the position.
