The Office of Clinical Affairs of the School of Dental Medicine at East Carolina University is responsible for all aspects of clinical activities of the school. This office works in close collaboration with the School's Offices of Extramural Clinical Practices; Student Affairs; Academic Success; Research; Dental Education and Informatics; Educational Support and Faculty Development; and Business Operations and Financial Affairs and the Departments of General Dentistry; Surgical Sciences; Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics; and Foundational Sciences to support the School's programs and initiatives. In addition, the Office of Clinical Affairs works closely with other Schools and Colleges of East Carolina University and local/regional health care facilities to provide information and services related to clinical affairs.
The Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs (ADCA) provides strategic leadership, oversight, and management for the School in the areas related to the School's clinical pre-doctoral, clinical residency, faculty practice and clinical research programs. The ADCA provides administrative support for the clinical activities in anticipation and response to the ongoing and evolving needs of modern dental students, residents, staff, faculty and patients. The ADCA maintains a strong supportive relationship with other administrators, faculty, staff, residents and students to provide a mission focus, and to ensure compliance with accreditation standards and the state and federal education, healthcare, and safety regulations related to the School's clinical facilities and clinical operations.
The ADCA oversees the activities of the Clinic Administrator and the Clinic Manager, who are responsible for the day-to-day management of the Ross Hall clinics. In addition, the ADCA works closely with the Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices (ADECP), the Director of the General Practice Residency (GPR) program, the Director of the Pediatric Dentistry residency program, and the Director of the Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program, and the Directors of Service Learning Center (SLC)-Ross Hall to ensure that the Community Service Learning Centers (CSLCs) and other internal and external clinical sites managed by the ECU School of Dental Medicine comply with all rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
Specific duties include:
Provide leadership in all matters related to the SoDM's clinical enterprise; serve as chair of the Clinical Affairs Committee.
Lead the School's quality assurance and improvement efforts, appropriately responding to patient complaints and serving as Chair of the Quality Assurance/ Quality Improvement Committee.
Serve as a member of the senior leadership team of the SoDM and as a member of DEC.
Ensure open communications with the Senior Director of Informatics so that hardware and software updates necessary for maintaining a contemporary electronic patient record are adhered to and that all security protocols are current.
Develop, implement, maintain and update the operations, policies and procedures related to clinical matters, delineating them in the ECU School of Dental Medicine's Clinic Handbook, and ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state and University requirements.
Lead the clinical affairs staff, providing direct support for the Clinic Administrator, Clinic Manager, Clinical Information Manager, Quality Assurance Director, and administrative support staff.
Oversee the physical clinical facilities, clinical equipment and clinical supply management in Ross Hall and work with the ADECP to ensure that all clinical operations and facilities are fully compliant with applicable federal, state and University requirements.
Develop a strong working relationship with the Office of Institutional Integrity and the SoDM Office of Compliance.
Provide leadership in managing the budget for the Office of Clinical Affairs and manage the SoDM's Instrument Lease Program.
Lead collaborative relationships with department chairs related to faculty calibration, credentialing and privileging and with deans and chairs in the development, refinement and implementation of the clinical aspects of the curriculum and in optimizing the use of technology to support clinical operations and learning.
Actively participate in the SoDM curricula through clinical teaching and other activities.
Manage SoDM clinical affiliation agreements with other clinical programs undertaking activities in Ross Hall.
Represent the SoDM with University and external constituencies related to licensure of faculty, residents and students and serve as a liaison with the North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners and testing agencies including CITA, ADEX and others.
Respond to local and national requests for information and documentation related to the SoDM's clinical programs.
Perform other duties and assuming additional responsibilities as assigned by the Dean.
As Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, this position qualifies as a Senior Academic and Administrative Officer. The Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs has substantial independence, administrative authority and discretion in all areas of responsibility. This position reports directly to the Dean of the School of Dental Medicine at East Carolina University.
Candidates should possess outstanding interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, and have a record of consensus building in an academic setting. This individual must have ability to quickly respond to requests with accuracy, reliability, and flexibility; this will frequently include assembling the right team of people to match the request that is presented.
The Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs will be considered for a tenured academic appointment with a senior rank in the School of Dental Medicine in a Department appropriate to the individual's qualifications.
