The Center for International Programs at the State University of New York at New Paltz seeks candidates for the International Student Adviser position.
Reporting to the Director of International Student Services, the International Student Adviser is responsible for the services and non-academic advising of international students from 50 countries in a variety of degree and other programs at SUNY New Paltz. The incumbent serves as a Department of Homeland Security authorized Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) to review and authorize F-1 Student and J-1 Exchange Visitor. The Adviser will regularly review the federal database for F and J immigration holders as required by current regulations and have primary responsibility for its integrity. Advise both continuing and newly arrived F and J visa holders on compliance with immigration regulations in person, through virtual appointment, on the telephone, by email, and in large group settings. Communication with federal immigration officials on behalf of the F and J population will also be required.
The International Student Adviser coordinates new international student orientation as well as social and cultural activities for international students. They advise international students on a variety of topics such as arrival, health care and insurance, taxation, travel and cross-cultural adjustment. The Adviser will coordinate outreach to support international student life by developing workshops, meeting with student groups, using social media and serving as a resource for the campus regarding international students. The International Student Adviser serves as a liaison for international students with campus services as well as state and local government offices, and is an advocate for international students in the United States.
Qualifications:
Required:
Bachelor's degree with significant relevant work experience
Experience with international clients including students, scholars or faculty
Evidence of cross-cultural sensitivity
Excellent interpersonal communication skills
Attention to detail and accuracy
Strong writing skills and the ability communicate with non-native speakers of English
Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality
Strong analytical, problem-solving and organizational skills
Ability to multi-task with demanding time-frames
Excellent computer and database skills
Willingness to work as part of a motivated international education team
Legal Permanent Residence or Citizenship in the United States*
Preferred:
Master's degree in International Education/Higher Education Administration or related field
Working knowledge of and experience with F-1 and J-1 regulations
Experience with SEVIS database functions and preparation of immigration documents (I-20's & DS-2019)
Experience living in another culture
Proficiency in a foreign language
Experience with Banner and/or Terra Dotta ISSS
Evidence of the ability to counsel students individually or as a group
Experience in program development for international students and scholars
Professional experience in a university setting – particularly in international education
Membership in NAFSA: The Association of International Educators
Demonstrated career interest in international education
* Must hold US citizenship or lawful permanent resident status to meet federal requirements for professional practice as a Designated School Official of the Immigration Service and Alternate Responsible Officer of the Department of State.
