Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Student Counselor for the School of Engineering- Academic Affairs. The Student Counselor reports to the Associate Dean for Student Services at School of Engineering Undergraduate Education to support the school's mission and the needs of our diverse student population. The academic advisor/student counselor position is a high student contact position responsible for promoting and achieving student success by providing comprehensive academic support and retention services to students and by making timely referrals to appropriate offices. The academic advisor is expected to provide reliable and timely academic advising to undergraduates at the School of Engineering, to maintain student records, to support scholastic standing reviews, to interact professionally and compassionately with all undergraduate students, as well as their parents/guardians, to coordinate advising related programming and activities, and to establish effective working relationships with the SoE departments and other campus partners on issues pertaining to academic policies and student advising.
The academic advisor works as an integral part of SoE Undergraduate Education, is expected to participate in university-wide and school-wide duties and functions such as commencement and graduation convocation, new students on boarding, degree audits, student engagement, recruitment and other special programs or events as assigned, and is expected to support a collaborative, team focused, and positive work environment that is student-centered and passionate about student success.
Among the key duties of the position are the following
Maintains in-person and remote advising hours and Live Chat advising as determined by the supervisor.
Helps student make academic plans and guide them in selecting appropriate major, minor, or classes.
Advises and supports students in academic difficulty or on academic probation.
Conveys academic policies and procedures to students, parents, UE staff and FWS staff, departmental advisors, and other constituents in a timely and welcoming manner.
Helps with planning and coordinator of advising related student programming.
Assists with the training and workflow of student employees in the Office of Academic Services.
Utilizes a variety of tools such as SSC, Canvas, Degree Navigator, or social media platforms to proactively connect with students, monitor their progress, and assist them with the degree progress.
Works under broad supervision with few direct instructions.
Makes independent decisions on the academic plans for students.
Provides resolutions to an assortment of moderately complex problems or academic conflicts.
Collaborates with various academic department and student services departments at the University to facilitate comprehensive student support and makes appropriate and timely referrals to services on campus including the Dean of Students, Learning Centers, CAPS, Health Services, Career Exploration & Success and Study Abroad.
Works as an active member of the UE team and participate in major events and programming at UE such as recruitment, student engagement, new students on-boarding, degree audits, and other special programs or events as assigned, pertaining to advising, responding to student inquiries, and student success.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires a bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Also requires two years of experience in college-level academic advising, student services or a closely related field, preferably in a large university setting.
