The Assistant Director, Career Advising is a team leadership position within the Career Development Center that will focus on building and implementing career coaching and preparation services, events, resources, and initiatives to prepare graduate and undergraduate students for internships and careers. Will work closely department leadership to execute a strategic plan for scaling career preparation services to all students with a focus on integrating career preparation into academics, athletics, and student life. Leads a staff of two Career Advisors providing supervision, guidance, and mentoring to expand career preparation functions. Serves on departmental leadership team for strategic planning, budgeting/finance, operations, and assessment. The Assistant Director, Career Advising will lead yearly assessment planning and evaluation activities, including the annual First Destination Outcomes initiative.
You will:
- Lead the Career Advising function of the Career Development Center including coaching/advising services, resource material development, workshops, event management, faculty and staff relations, career integration activities, diversity, equity, and inclusion programming, and other daily team activities. Provide team with guidance, mentoring, and a focus on skill and staff development.
- Serve on departmental Leadership Team to develop set strategy, review operations, implement continuous improvement, run staff meetings, develop professional development programs, lead budget setting and compliance, and resolve departmental issues. Attend Student Affairs Department Heads meetings as needed.
- Provide co-leadership and oversight to the department student staff, delegating daily supervision of students to Career Advisors. Work with Leadership Team to develop staffing budgets, schedules, hiring/training, and performance evaluations.
- Ensure the career readiness of students by helping to lead the life and career readiness competency initiative, as well as through application ready courses, candidate pool building, and interview training. Develop tracking measures and assessment tools to ensure students are articulating their skills and competencies to employer partners.
- Collaborate with faculty, academic resource departments, student life, and retention departments to identify student populations, especially those at-risk, for the purpose of delivering career assessment and coaching. Design and implement proactive strategies to meet the needs of at-risk students.
- Work with Leadership Team to oversee the planning and implementation of annual and long-term departmental assessment planning including learning outcomes, goals, long term strategic planning, and survey/assessment tool creation and evaluation. Serve as lead on data collection, assessment, and reporting activities for the department.
SECONDARY DUTIES:
- Work with students and alumni on all career development related needs including resume/cover letter development, job/internship searches, interviewing assistance, and graduate school preparation.
- Develop and maintain knowledge of local, regional, and national hiring trends as well as employer preferences for hiring college graduates. Develop and maintain knowledge of graduate schools, application trends, and testing requirements.
- Utilize office technologies including Handshake, Interstride, Teams, Big Interview, and related tech for daily office operations and education programs.
- Support Division of Student Affairs mission and activities by serving on divisional committees, supporting divisional events, and engaging colleagues in career development.
- Other duties as assigned.
You need:
Master's degree in Counseling, Education, or related field AND at least five years of related student counseling, coaching, or advising experience, preferably in a college career center OR appropriate combination of education and work experience.
- Knowledge of career planning theory, practices, and techniques.
- Experience working with students and alumni on career development needs including resumes, job searching, internships, interviewing, graduate school preparation, portfolios, and other career-related information and resources. ?
- Ability to collaborate with faculty and staff on academic and career planning programs.
- Knowledge of issues pertaining to: first-generation college students, graduate students, international students, mid-career changers, and senior level alumni. ?
- Skill in both verbal and written communication. Outgoing, friendly, and self-motivated. Ability to handle multiple tasks and work with constant interruptions.
- Proficiency with technology including MS Office, online research, online career development tools, and other office technology
