University of Minnesota Morris Native American Student Success seeks a Mental Health, Wellbeing, and Cultural Coordinator. The Coordinator builds connections and services to foster Native American studentsâ™ health and wellbeing through strong cultural programming, including increasing the understanding of intergenerational trauma in Native communities and interrupting its impacts. The Coordinator will facilitate student mental health workshops, access to culturally protective practices, and other related programs and services. The position facilitates visits by Native American elders, aunties, knowledge keepers, and mental health professionals specializing in historical trauma, mental health/wellbeing, Native lifeways, and culturally protective practices. This position will lead efforts to build relationships that support students' home away from home, sense of belonging, and mental health and wellbeing.
The Coordinator is one of three key personnel within the UMN Morris US Department of Education Native American-Serving NonTribal Institutions (NASNTI) project -- Fostering Native American student educational equity and Bachelorâ™s degree attainment. A core project component builds understanding of and resources to address historical and intergenerational trauma and their impacts in Native American students' lives â“ experiences hampering college retention and completion.
The position reports to the Associate Director of Native American Student Success for Educational Equity. This is a 100% time 12-month Civil Service position as Student Services Professional 2 8462AC Student Advocacy & Support. This position is supported by US Department of Education NASNTI funds through September 2025; UMN Morris intends to seek NASNTI 2025 funding to further this work through Sept. 2030.

Job Duties/Responsibilities: Responsibilities may vary depending on the individualâ™s experience and qualifications.
Mental Health and Wellbeing Support (50%)
Provide mental health resources, services, and programming embedded within Native American Student Success, Gateway, Morris 1101, Student Support Services (SSS), Equity and Intercultural Programs, and other programs that support the personal and academic success of Native American and low-income students and seamlessly integrate student health and wellbeing services and programs.
Work with students to develop goals and well being action plans. Facilitate student access to needed mental health resources and services, working with the Student Counseling team and program staff in NASS, Gateway, SSS, and other programs.
Assist in supervising and guiding NASS cultural coordinators, peer mentors, and student workers in their working within the Mental Health, Wellbeing, and Cultural programming framework.
Serve on the UMN Morris CARE Team as a principal NASS representative.
Cultural Program Support (25% - 50%)
Work with the NASS and Student Counseling leadership teams to coordinate visits by professionals, elders, and knowledge keepers specializing in Native American historical trauma, mental health, wellbeing, resiliency, and culturally protective practices. Organize visit events. Assist in coordinating faculty/staff professional development workshops focused on Native American student wellbeing.
Coordinate support for visits, cultural programs, and access to culturally protective practices, in coordination with the NASS Associate Director and a cultural programs team with student cultural coordinators and administrative team members
Provide outreach workshops and services that address the academic, personal, and emotional needs of Native American and low-income students, such as Cultural Craft Circles, Paint Sip and Mental Health, and other cultural workshops.
Document program participation and assessment. Make evaluation-informed program improvements.
Participate in professional development activities. Attend and be visible at campus events and programs relevant to student populations being served.
Coordinate and supervise summer Native Garden development and implementation.
Instruction and Mentoring (0% - 25%)
Add related resources within the Native-centric sections of the Morris 1101 first year seminar supporting new studentsâ™ college transition, wellbeing, and success.
For Coordinators with masterâ™s degrees, teach agreed upon Interdisciplinary Studies course(s) such as the Gateway IS 1051 summer bridge components and a Native-centric section of the Morris 1101 transition course; coordinate with other instructors and peer mentors. Serve as a success coach for Morris 1101 students in their first year and beyond.
Required Qualifications:
BA/BS with at least two years of experience of a combination of related education or work experience to equal six years
Cultural knowledge and experience (personal or academic) that supports an understanding of Native American studentsâ™ college needs
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to work cooperatively with others in wellbeing and student support settings
Evidence of experience working with Native American students, low-income students, students at academic risk, and/or first generation students
Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to diverse student populations and the ability to contribute to the UMN Morris commitment to a diverse, inclusive learning environment
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in a related field (required for teaching roles)
Knowledge and skills related to college studentsâ™ emotional and behavioral health, multicultural psychology, and/or integration of social justice frameworks
Background that includes overcoming barriers similar to those of participants
Workshop presentation and/or teaching experience
Experience working with individuals of diverse and intersecting races/ethnicities, cultures, genders, sexualities, and other identities
