Job Overview
The College of Medicine, Center for Student Success is seeking to hire an Academic Advisor/Senior Academic Advisor to work with the Public Health undergraduate students, staff, and faculty to meet our program?s objectives.
The Center for Student Success (CSS) works to identify and recruit a diverse student body of future leaders in the fields of clinical practice (including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and other healthcare professions), medical research, and public health.
The selected candidate will provide academic advising, intervention, support services, and programming to students. The position requires a high degree of accountability, responsibility and a strong student-centric approach. The individual will be expected to exercise sound judgment as it relates to dealing with students, faculty, staff, administrative personnel, and parents.
Essential Functions
Advise both in person and online current and prospective students on how to meet their educational and career goals through best practices in advising and appropriate referrals to student support services.
Create academic plans, maintain accurate and up-to-date student records, meet with students to assess and discuss progress, and support students in meeting Public Health Program requirements.
Evaluate student information and utilize data to facilitate enrollment and registration.
In partnership with faculty, assess advanced standing credit, substitute courses to meet graduation requirements, and create degree audit exceptions. Facilitate and/or complete degree certification.
Give presentations to various classes/populations as well as new student advising at orientation. The Advisor may be called upon to give Admissions presentations to prospective applicants to the program.
Work closely with faculty and staff on programmatic and student issues.
Support student needs with sound equity and inclusion practices for student success.
Engage in ongoing professional development and training to maintain up-to-date knowledge about advising practices, policies, technologies, and student success needs at the university and in higher education.
Function as a member of the Center for Student Success team to ensure the proper workflow and outcomes.
Collaborate with UC advising community colleagues to advance quality advising practice.
May lead a programmatic area of oversight and planning for a student success program or function within the center. Conceptualize, develop, implement, and evaluate the program. Train new academic advisors and other unit staff on key student service functions.
Recommend policy to best meet student needs.
Attend related meetings and functions.
May teach one or more college-level courses each year.
May provide direct and/or indirect supervision to student workers and/or ambassadors (i.e., hiring, evaluation, disciplinary action, scheduling, etc.) May advise student organization groups.
The Advisor must be detail-oriented and have strong interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills. Must be able to retain a high volume of programmatic, college, and university related information while having the ability to critically think through complex situations.
Minimum Requirements
Academic Advisor:
Required Education
Bachelor?s Degree.
Required Experience
Zero (0) to one (1) year of student service or related experience.
- OR -
Senior Academic Advisor:
Required Education Bachelor?s Degree. Required Experience Three (3) years of academic advising and/or student success experience.
Additional Qualifications Considered
Master?s Degree.
