Position Summary
The Assistant Director of Campus Events is responsible for the leadership development, advisement, and management of the Rice Program Council (RPC), which hosts both on and off-campus events such as Welcome Back Day, student formals, Beer Bike, and other substance-free late-night programming. The position advises the Passport to Houston Committee, providing risk mitigation guidance as well. The Assistant Director assists with providing risk management education, consultations, and plan reviews for registered clubs. The role is responsible for budget oversight of directly-advised organizations, ensuring compliance with University financial policies and procedures, and assesses and evaluates functional areas. The position also contributes to the Student Center mission through support of various office programs to enhance campus vibrancy.
Ideal candidates should have experience advising and training students, and planning events. The ability to mitigate risk and provide consultations to high-performing student leaders is also important.
Workplace Requirements
This position is offered as a hybrid role, combining both in-office and remote work to provide flexibility and support collaboration. The position would work one day remotely and four days in-office during the academic year, and two days remotely and three days in-office during the summer. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.
Hiring Range: $48,700-$51,500 annually contingent upon qualifications and experience
Exempt (salaried) positions under FLSA are not eligible for overtime.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree
- Two years of related experience advising or working with college students in a one-on-one setting and including any of the following:
- Experience advising large-scale and/or campus wide programs
- Experience advising students, student programs, and student event planning
- Experience with event risk management
- In lieu of the experience requirement, additional related education, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis may be substituted

Essential Functions:
- Supports department and area mission vision and goals
- Directly advises the Rice Program Council (RPC), which includes executive officers (5), committee chairs (14), and campus-wide Beer Bike coordinators (2)
- Advises and guides student leaders in the planning and implementation of program and event logistics, including budgeting, risk management and event execution
- Leads the contract review and execution process for directly-advised student events
- Coordinates leadership development programming and relevant trainings for directly advised student leaders
- Oversees and provides guidance to students on the budgets for RPC, Beer Bike and Passport to Houston, which include student blanket tax, university funds and external gifts/donations
- Responsible for personal procurement card, RPC bank cards, and upholding university financial policies and procedures
- Ensures all expenditures are within budget, meet documentation standards, and are submitted in a timely manner
- Responsible for logistics and marketing related to area(s) of responsibility
- Documents, assesses and compiles reports on area functions on a regular basis
- Provides presence and support for student meetings and large-scale programs, which will include evening and weekend attendance
- Performs all other duties as assigned
Additional Functions
- May supervise student staff/interns as necessary
- Provides consultations and one-on-one advisement for high-profile events
- Engages in risk management outreach related to large-scale funded events, as well as alcohol related programming
- May review and provides recommendations pertaining to and travel requests and/or other events with elevated risk
- May assist with reviewing and processing student event submissions within OwlNest, a student-engagement platform
- Occasionally, attendance at after-hours departmental events on or off-campus may be required
