The Johns Hopkins Underrepresented in Medical Professions (JUMP) program was established in 2011 as a pioneering commitment to promote the success of high-achieving students from underrepresented populations who are preparing for careers in medicine and the health professions. Through the landmark gift of $1.8 billion by Michael R. Bloomberg that is dedicated to meeting 100% demonstrated need with no-loan financial aid packages for first-generation and limited-income (FLI) students and the robust expansion of FLI initiatives at Johns Hopkins University, the JUMP program has evolved from a small cohort-based program to a premier 4yr+ enrichment program.
The newly imagined JUMP program is a learning community for all underrepresented (URM) and/or FLI students on a pre-med/pre-health pathway at Johns Hopkins University (JHU). The JUMP program is aligned with and actively attuned to the definition of underrepresented in medicine and holistic review practices of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Working closely with the Office of Pre-Professional advising, JUMP is centered on developing knowledge and essential skills for successfully navigating the pre-med/pre-health pathways at Hopkins and beyond. JUMP programming is anchored in five core pillars: Academic & Testing Support, Mentoring, JUMP Community Building/Baltimore Community Connections, Leadership & Health Professions Exploration and Pre-Health Pathways & Milestones.
We are seeking a JUMP Assistant Director, Prgoramming who will join both JUMP Program's Director and Assistant Director for Student Development. Together as a team, they will continue to develop and implement a strategic framework for the reimagined JUMP Program. This individual will demonstrate cross-cultural nuance in developing and implementing programming specific to URM and/or FLI students and in holistic advising for URM and/or FLI students. As advocates for URM and/or FLI students in their overall student experience and pursuit of their academic and professional goals, the JUMP Assistant Director, Programming will establish collaborations, within Johns Hopkins and external to the University, that promote student success and the overall mission of the program. More specifically, this role will support collaborative programming between JUMP and the Office of Pre-Professional Advising, other programs in the Center for Student Success, the Office of Multicultural Affairs, Life Design and the Offices of Academic Advising.
The JUMP Assistant Director, Programming will also sustain meaningful connections to community-based organizations in the health care fields, medical schools, and national organizations and programs that support URM and/or FLI students in their pursuit of careers in the health professions.
Note: The JUMP Assistant Director, Programmingreports to the Director of JUMP in the Center for Student Success.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Programming & Collaborative Partnerships (65%)
Coordinate and execute JUMP recruitment efforts by identifying and recruiting eligible JUMP participants each year
Support the curriculum efforts and programming of the following two JUMP Pillars:
Develop a Health Professional Mentorship Network
JUMP Community Building/Baltimore Community Connections
Develop a JUMP wellness program and curate Baltimore volunteer opportunities
Coordinate workshops, events, and programming that deepens the understanding of diverse pathways and the essential skills based on holistic review practices for ~ 500 – 800 URM and/or FLI students pursuing careers in the health professions.
Support the student-driven programming of three JUMP Student Committees: Computational Medicine, Physician/ Scientist Track (MD/PHD), Social Activities/Wellness/Volunteer Committee
Maintain the JUMP 5+ year calendar that includes oversight and coordination or all JUMP events and services
Develop and coordinate the Reflection and Expressive Competence Application Program (RECAP) workshops for all JUMP students as a core program element of the JUMP program and experience.
In collaboration with the Director, support the JUMP Bridge Year curriculum dedicated to the successful application and matriculation of JHU JUMP graduates who are continuing to pursue health profession careers.
Provide holistic small group advising to JUMP Members and, on a limited as-needed basis, individual advising, that prioritizes students' knowledge of the pre-med pathway and specific skill-building.
Collaborate with the Office of Pre-Professional Advising and Office of Academic Advising to ensure students are receiving academic advising and success coaching, pre-professional advising, and holistic review advising.
Stay abreast of current and national trends of URM, first-generation, and/or limited-income college students pursuing careers in the health professions. Remain current in the field of pre-health advising, AAMC holistic review practices, and medical school admissions.
Collaborate with JUMP partners, including the Office of Pre-Professional Advising, Life Design, the National Fellowships Program to enhance academic and post-graduation planning for JUMP students.
Facilitate referrals as appropriate.
Develop and manage programming-related budget and logistical outlines; procurement on behalf of the JUMP program for items, vendors, etc.
Conduct program evaluations and produce individual event reports as well as semester participation reports for designated programs.
Work with JUMP staff to recruit, train and supervise undergraduate student interns.
Support the Director in maintaining a system to track student participation JUMP programming and FLI Initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
Master's Degree in Counseling, Higher Education, a health-related field or science required.
Three years' experience in advising, mentoring or guiding college students; designing innovative programming; and establishing/maintaining collaborative working relationships with professionals.
Familiarity with the academic rigors of pursuing a career in science, medicine or related health professions is required.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity in higher education--particularly science and/or medical education.
Demonstrated success working with and developing programming for underrepresented racial minorities (African-American, Hispanic, Pacific Islander, Native-American), first-generation students, and students from limited-income families.
Five years' experience as an academic advisor or pre-professional advisor in a higher education setting, or as a health care professional in a higher education environment.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Ability to work in a cross-cultural environment.
Must be available and willing to work some evenings / weekends as required for events and programming.
Ability to use appropriate judgment when dealing with sensitive issues.
Extensive knowledge and experiences managing holistic advising, assessment, academic and student affairs collaborations, diversity, and inclusion. In particular, ability to influence societal and workplace attitudes that honor principles to create a more inclusive community.
Exceptional interpersonal, oral, public speaking, writing, and listening skills.
Demonstrated experience developing, articulating, operationalizing, and assessing strategic priorities.
Proven ability to cultivate trust and credibility with colleagues and to build positive and effective relationships.
Proven track record of establishing strategic relationships to strengthen program and service delivery.
