The Opportunity
The Assistant Director of Undergraduate Advising is part of a team of Cornell Bowers CIS advising professionals dedicated to supporting, developing, and empowering the college's more than 2,000 majors who hail from three distinct admitting colleges--the Cornell College of Arts & Sciences, the Cornell College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and Cornell Engineering.
Using a holistic, developmental advising approach, the assistant director of undergraduate advising will actively advise a portfolio of ~400 Cornell Bowers CIS majors, as well as potential majors and minors and internal and external transfer students, on a one-on-one basis. They will also be a key member of the student services team tasked with building a Cornell Bowers CIS undergraduate culture and identifying opportunities to enhance the Cornell Bowers CIS undergraduate student experience.
What You'll Do
- Advising: Provide developmental, holistic 1:1 advising and coaching to a portfolio of ~400 Cornell Bowers CIS majors, plus potential majors and internal and external transfer students, on their academic, professional, and personal goals; strategies for problem-solving and self-empowerment; course and degree options and requirements; co-curricular, experiential, and study abroad opportunities; personal crises and emergencies; voluntary, health, and required leaves of absence; and overall mental and physical health and well-being.
- Program Coordination: In partnership with your fellow advisors, manage the affiliation process for applicants to Cornell Bowers CIS majors (communicate requirements, review applications, make and communicate decisions, process records, etc.); oversee credit transfer requests and petitions; participate in early intervention activities; serve on academic standards and other committees; actively partner with faculty advisors on student support and development; track and confirm progress toward degree; and be a consistent, visible presence for Bowers CIS students, among other duties.
- Programming: Contribute to developing, implementing, and evaluating programs and initiatives related to student experience, success, belonging, and well-being; identify trends and areas of opportunity.
- Campus Partnerships: Build strong relationships with college advising and registrar teams (particularly in our three admitting colleges (Arts and Sciences, CALS, and Engineering), as well as with other campus partners, (e.g., Athletics, Cornell Health, Global Learning, Learning Strategies Center, Office of Academic Diversity Initiatives, Residence Life, Student Disability Services, Student Support and Advocacy Services, etc.); actively participate in Cornell's Professional Academic Advising Community; and serve on college or university ad hoc or regular committees.

You have:
- Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
- Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Ability to serve as an advocate for individuals of all ethnicities, genders, ages, and backgrounds.
- Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
- A bachelor's degree and two to four years' experience as an academic advisor or related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Strong communication skills, especially listening, writing, and public speaking.
- The agility to balance significant complexity and competing demands.
- Strong technical skills and an aptitude for learning new technology.
- Ability to operate in compliance with federal, state, and university data privacy and security regulations, policies, and best practices relating to the access and use of student records.
- Sound professional judgment.
- The flexibility to work occasional evening and/or weekend events, as well as annually on the Friday and Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend to support Cornell Bowers CIS and University May Commencement weekend activities.

What We Prefer
It would be a bonus if you have any of the following:
- A master's degree or coursework in higher education administration, counseling, social work, leadership development, or related field.
- Five or more years' advising or related higher education experience.
- Knowledge of student development theory and practice.
- Experience with program design, delivery, and outcomes thinking.
- Experience with Client Relationship Management systems and/or student information systems, including Salesforce, FileMaker Pro, and/or PeopleSoft.
