Director, Student Intervention and Success
Job Summary:
The Director, Student Intervention and Success will lead the implementation of a new area within the Division of Campus Life and Student Experience. The Director is responsible for holistically managing student support initiatives including case management for students taking time away from the College and student conduct for those who may have violated College policy as well as others affected by the violation. In their first year, the Director will have the opportunity to review, implement, and socialize necessary changes to the Code of Conduct and Honor System.
Working with colleagues internal and external to the Division of Campus Life and Student Experience, the Director will establish an operation that is dedicated to enhancing pre-existing, College-wide student support services, and will be charged with developing structures and resources that will have a continued positive effect on the Barnard student experience.The Director incorporates and manages supportive measures for students facing adversity, including students managing personal and academic issues that may affect their continued enrollment, and students navigating the College's conduct processes. The Director will identify and deploy national best practices within the field of student affairs, to develop and maintain consistent policies and processes that are fair, equitable, and student-centered, and will practice continuous assessment of their processes.
This is a 12-month, in-person role. Regular business hours cannot define the typical work week. The position requires some evening and weekend hours, including addressing unpredictable and time-sensitive issues.
Job Description:
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Lead administrative oversight of the student conduct process, including alleged violations of the Code of Conduct and Honor Code. Guide the Associate Director for Community Standards and Investigations in relevant work, including timeliness and equity in processing cases, providing outcomes and sanctions, and maintaining records.
Oversee the Division's case management efforts, including centralizing specialized support for students, such as those preparing to take or returning from a leave of absence, or those who are managing challenges that may affect their enrollment at the College. Guide the College Case Manager and Leaves & Returns Coordinator in relevant work, including collaboration with colleagues that manage various aspects of a student's enrolled status.
Directly supervise the Associate Director for Community Standards and Investigations; College Case Manager and Leaves & Returns Coordinator.
Maintain regular collaboration and consultation with colleagues in departments that manage complex and often confidential student matters including but not limited to: Residential Life & Housing, the Deans' Office for Advising and Support, Title IX and Nondiscrimination, Community Safety, Health and Wellness, Office of the General Counsel.
Create a mechanism for the department to provide guidance and training to students, student organizations, faculty, staff, and administrators on matters related to the Honor System, Code of Conduct, Case Management, and incident reporting and follow-up.
Identify and deploy national best practices within the field of student affairs, to develop and maintain consistent policies and processes that are fair, equitable, and student-centered.
Ensure relevant records in data management databases (currently Advocate system and Slate) are maintained and up-to-date. Review, edit, and disseminate outcome letters and other communication.
As needed, speak with parents/families and other support persons to effectively assist in managing complex student situations.
Establish and co-chair the Behavioral Intervention Team. Provide intake support for student matters, and work with colleagues in Human Resources, Community Safety, and other College departments to ensure intake, response, and support for personnel matters.
Lead annual policy and procedure reviews of the Honor System and Student Code of Conduct, in consultation with the Vice Dean for Campus Life, Office of General Counsel, and other campus stakeholders.
Provide oversight of departmental data compilation and maintenance. Lead the production of mid-year and annual reports in alignment with assessment needs.
Apply student development theory in utilizing ethical and developmental processes that support growth for individuals and the community as a whole.
Collaborate with colleagues, particularly in Nondiscrimination and TIX and Community Safety, to produce data and other relevant information to develop reports including but not limited to the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report.
Actively collaborate with designated individuals to develop and sustain a coordinated approach to promoting community standards and a safe campus environment.
Serve as a member of the Dean's Evaluation Committee, and actively participate in campus committees within the College and the University as requested.
Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Skills, Qualifications & Requirements:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide variety of individuals, including students, faculty, administrators, alumnae, parents/families.
- Familiarity with best practices in Student Conduct and an educational and developmental approach to working with students.
- Ability to independently manage caseload and competing priorities.
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to help others understand policy and procedure
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including proper documentation and protection of sensitive information.
- Appropriate and effective use of discretion and sound judgment
- Adaptability to the needs and goals of the office and attending to day-to-day operations.
- Proficiency with technology (e.g.data management systems, spreadsheet development). Experience with Advocate and Maxient preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to work with and among diverse communities
- Demonstrated experience or interest in working in a liberal arts environment
- Diplomacy and the ability to work as a member of a team is essential.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's degree in student affairs administration, higher education administration, or related field.
- Minimum of 7 years of direct experience working with students related to conduct and minimum 5 years in management experience.
Salary Range: $105,000- $115,000 annually
The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
