The Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law seeks a personable, cooperative, and organized individual for the position of Director, College of Law – D.C. Career Services. The director will be based at Arizona State University’s Barrett & O’Connor Washington Center in Washington, D.C., and work closely with the Career Services team in Phoenix as well as the College of Law staff in Washington, D.C. They will report to the Assistant Dean of Student Career Success and Employer Relations.
The director’s primary responsibilities will be advising and assisting law students and recent graduates on employment and externship matters with a focus on Washington, D.C. and the East Coast; and cultivating relationships with employers and externship providers in Washington, D.C., and on the East Coast.
More specifically, they will provide one-on-one advising to students in-person and remotely, design resources, and coordinate programming and events for students. The director will also counsel students on job search skills such as resume and cover letter creation, applying to different types of legal employers, interviewing techniques, and developing a plan to achieve short-term and long-term career goals.
The director’s secondary responsibilities will include providing general student support on academic and student life issues as well assisting with the development of the College of Law’s programs in Washington, D.C. and abroad. They will work with the Director of D.C. Programs and D.C. Program Coordinator to ensure an innovative and supportive approach to assisting students in their studies and their job search and also promote recognition of the College of Law on the East Coast and internationally.

Located in Washington, D.C., Arizona State University’s Barrett & O’Connor Washington Center is close to the White House, World Bank, and large multi-national law firms. The College of Law’s Washington, D.C. program, based in the Barrett & O’Connor Washington Center, draws more than 25 students per year from its main campus in Phoenix.
The D.C. Program includes the Antitrust, International Rule of Law and Security, and Indian Legal Programs as well as course offerings in a number of other areas. It offers a rigorous academics with a global perspective and exciting ways to take advantage of Washington, D.C. While studying, students can build their schedules around competitive externships in the public or private sectors. The International Rule of Law and Security program provides opportunities for students to extern internationally over the summer as well.
Essential Duties:
Assist students with identifying and securing externships and employment
Review and provide feedback on resumes, cover letters, and interview skills
Design and implement career-related programming and events
Cultivate relationships with employers and externship providers
Advise students on academic matters and law school and university policies
Help students who are in distress
Outline and send student communications
Collaborate with other teams within the College of Law to best ensure student satisfaction and success
Physical presence at the workplace or the college is an essential function of this job
Perform other duties as assigned to support the goals of the College of Law
Desired Qualifications:
Licensed to practice law in a U.S. jurisdiction
At least three years of experience working in law practice, law school career services, student services, or legal recruiting, preferably in Washington, D.C. or on the East Coast
Exceptional interpersonal skills
Strong desire to help people
Demonstrated experience in:
organizational skills and project management;
working in a fast-paced environment;
working with diverse constituencies;
effective verbal and written communication;
working with students and young professionals;
preparing and monitoring a budget
Evidence of strategic, analytical, conceptual and communication skills, along with being a collaborative, adaptable, creative and effective problem solver
