Definition of Classification: The Graduate Assistant develops, plans and facilitates recreational sports programs.
Reporting to the Assistant Dean, Student Engagement, the primary function of this position is to provide leadership and direction in the programming of Intramural Sports. This position is a member of the department's leadership team. This position requires flexible working hours, which will include working some evenings, weekends, and some holidays.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Directs Intramural Sports.
- Guides and supports Student workers, hiring, training and developing intramural sports referees and managers.
- Collaborates with student affairs partners, including NCAA Athletics, Student Involvement and Success, ResLife and Housing, E Sports and others.
- Develops intramural sports offerings to broaden accessibility to the campus population.
- Mentors and assists in developing student workers.
- Aligns work and goals with the university and Student Affairs division learning outcomes to include Perseverance and Professionalism, Communication, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Collaboration and Teamwork and Engaged Stewardship.
- Assesses the participation and impact of Intramural Sports; uses data to make informed decisions on how to best support students with Intramural sports offering and programming.
- Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, by fostering environments that are open and accessible to all identities, races, and protected groups.
- Actively seeks opportunities and builds programming for involvement with underrepresented groups of students.
- Communicates with both students and colleagues across multiple communication modes; directly communicates in-person via student instruction, coaching and mentorship; communicates digitally via email, social media across various audiences including externally.
- Supports Recreation and Student Involvement and success on various Student Affairs programs, including New Student Orientation, involvement fairs, commencement, etc.
- Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualification Guidelines Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following:
Experience/Training/Education: - Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Education or equivalent is required. Admission to a graduate program at the University of Redlands or other university/college is required.
- One year of experience coordinating recreational sports leagues including refereeing, and scheduling or related experience.
- A valid California Class C CA drivers' license with a good driving record is required. A current DMV printout demonstrating a good driving record will be required prior to offer of employment.
Special Licenses/Certificates: - Basic First Aid and CPR certifications, preferred.
- Fitness Instructor certification, preferred.
- Red Cross Lifeguard certification or equivalent, preferred.
Knowledge and Skills: - Knowledge of rules, guidelines, and regulations for a variety of recreation sports.
- Knowledge of collegiate sport rules and ability to demonstrate and teach to others.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws and regulations.
- Knowledge of safety practices
- General knowledge and understanding of concepts, principles, and practices of program management.
- Principles of individual and group behavior.
- Effective organizational skills, ability to meet deadlines, and manage multiple priorities.
- Adaptable to change in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work with and be sensitive to the traditional college age student.
- Ability to advise staff.
- Ability to develop and implement programs and produce effective outcomes.
- Work effectively both individually and with groups.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to give presentations and interact with diverse populations.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Effective organizational skills, ability to meet deadlines, and manage multiple priorities.
- Proficiency in computer skills using Microsoft Office Suite including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and other applications.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment.
- Aptitude to learn new and evolving technology.
- Ability to work independently.
- High level of skill in making responsible, informed decisions in the moment.
- Ability to oversee, advise, engage, develop, and mentor college-age students.
- Flexibility to adjust work schedule to meet the needs of students and staff.
- Must be able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Working Conditions:
Standard office and field setting. Duties performed are in an office environment while sitting at a desk or computer workstation or in meetings, and outside at sports recreation facilities. The position requires working evenings, weekends, and some holidays.
Physical Demands:
Incumbents regularly sit for long periods; stand, and walk on a regular basis; occasionally may run; use hands and fingers to operate an electronic keyboard or other office machines; reach with hands and arms; stoop or kneel or crouch to file; speak clearly and distinctly to answer telephones and to provide information; see to read fine print and operate computer; hear and understand voices over telephone and in person; and lift, carry and/or move objects weighing up to 20 pounds.
