Simpson College, a private liberal arts college in Indianola, Iowa, invites applications for its next Vice President for Student Development.
The Vice President for Student Development provides strategic direction and oversight for non-academic student services and programs. Serve as member of President’s Cabinet and college leadership, contributing student-centered focus to institutional decision-making.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Provide direct supervision to directors of primary programs and services within the division, including residence life, health and counseling, career development, TRIO programs, and new student orientation; direct supervision of lead administrative assistant.
Specific job duties and responsibilities may include but not be limited to the following:
Oversee direction and management of Division programs and services; provide direct supervision to the divisional leadership team.
Serve as a student advocate and resource for students, student organizations, and activities. Advise student leadership honor society.
Provide oversight and direction for divisional budgets; oversee divisional planning and assessment.
Collaborate in the development and monitoring of college-wide student engagement and retention efforts.
Monitor and provide oversight for student conduct and appellate processes.
Oversee institutional emergency preparedness and response.
Simpson College is a vibrant four-year private college affiliated with the United Methodist Church and located in Indianola, Iowa. Simpson’s full residential community houses around 90 percent of the college’s full-time population of approximately 1100 students. Indianola has a population of around 16,000 and is just 12 miles south of Des Moines.
Education and Experience: Advanced degree in higher education administration/student affairs or related degree. Minimum 8-10 years prior experience with functions related to student affairs.
Required Skills/Abilities: Ability to form effective and interculturally appropriate interpersonal relationships; outstanding written and verbal communication skills. Ability to gather, analyze, and use data for effective planning and decision-making. Ability to prioritize competing demands and flexibly respond to evolving circumstances.
Preferred Experience: Prior experience at a small to mid-sized college or university is preferred.
