POSITION SUMMARY: The Associate Dean, Student Academic Success, provides college-level leadership, directs the coordination of academic support programs and services within Academic Affairs, and administers the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship program. The Associate Dean is charged with working in collaboration with the Quantitative Skills Center; Center for Speaking, Writing, and the Image; International and Domestic Programs; Oldenborg Center for Modern Languages and International Relations; and other academic centers, units, and departments to create a framework for student academic success that aligns with Pomona College’s Strategic Vision, and to coordinate training, assessment, and program management. This individual provides leadership and support for national college access programs, Chicago and Miami Posses, Questbridge, and academic cohort initiatives such as Pomona Science Scholars and Pomona Scholars in Math. The Associate Dean for Student Academic Success also works collaboratively with campus partners (e.g., Student Affairs, Admissions and Financial Aid, Career Development Office, and the Draper Center) and helps ensure that all Pomona students have equal access to the tools they need to flourish.
Reporting directly to the Dean of the College, the Associate Dean for Student Academic Success performs the following essential duties and responsibilities:
Providing vision and leadership to create a strong team among associate deans and academic support center directors, career development, fellowships, internships, and experiential learning. Helping units and departments within Academic Affairs to establish, assess, and meet goals related to learning outcomes. Identifying, in collaboration with associate deans and directors, student-focused interventions to track, assess, document, and report on student and program outcomes. Providing student support from admission to graduation, as students move through and “beyond the gates.”
Implementing a framework for student academic success in Academic Affairs. Developing a shared vision, coordination, and an implementation plan to provide integrated and holistic student support that aligns with the Strategic Vision for Pomona College, the educational mission of Academic Affairs, and the learning goals of units and departments. Mapping student-facing efforts, identifying gaps, needs and overlap among initiatives, and coordinating data collection and reporting about academic support services. Planning and running workshops related to academic support; providing presentations on identifying and dealing with academic learning and support for specific populations, including students of color, first-generation students, and neuro-divergent community members.
Developing and leading cross-college and consortial partnerships to enhance and amplify student academic success initiatives. Coordinating all student support programs in Academic Affairs, such as PSS, PSM, POSSE, Questbridge, and department-based groups. Fostering relationships with deans and directors in Student Affairs at Pomona and at The Claremont Colleges (TCC). Attending meetings of and providing support for the Teaching and Learning Committee, and coordinating with the 7Cs Center for Teaching and Learning. Working with the Registrar and Office of Institutional Research on data collection and analysis.
Directing and overseeing higher education access programs and student support initiatives. Directing and administering the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship program. Writing and managing grants and grant renewal processes.
Partnering with the Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to develop, direct, and implement assessments of academic excellence and inclusive practices across campus. Creating an inventory of existing data regarding equity and inclusion efforts on campus (Climate Survey, Course Evaluations, Faculty Reflections, etc.). Working on a diversity strategic plan for the College, co-creating and implementing programs and initiatives at the intersection of student success and faculty development.
QUALIFICATIONS: Doctoral degree in higher education or a specific academic discipline, or related field is strongly preferred. Master’s degree required. A minimum of 5 years of experience with increasing responsibility in the areas of academic support, student success and retention, higher education access programs, equity-informed assessment, or a related research field is required. Experience at an academic institution is preferred.

Demonstrate effective, accurate and clear communication with excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, reading, and leadership skills in order to supervise or collaborate, facilitate and motivate and inspire a highly diverse group of students, faculty, staff, student staff.Must also assist and communicate well with parents, students, alumni, volunteers, community partners, and other possible stakeholders.
Operate computers with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, and PowerPoint), experience with assessment software and financial platforms.
Handle all activities and highly confidential information with patience, discretion, good judgment, courtesy and tact while working with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
The Claremont Colleges, a consortium of five undergraduate liberal arts colleges, two graduate institutions, and Claremont University Consortium, which provides shared institutional support services, is reminiscent of the Oxford-Cambridge model.
