We are seeking an Associate Director, Digital Media Center. This position is responsible for strategic leadership, implementation, evaluation and oversight of the Digital Media Center (DMC). The Associate Director of the DMC works as a collaborative leader with professional and student staff, providing creative and meaningful programming in addition to overseeing operational and administrative duties for the DMC. The DMC is part of the Office of Arts and Innovation (OAI), whose programming is focused on co-curricular activities that provide opportunities for students to build communities and engage meaningfully with staff and peers through performing, visual, and creative arts. The DMC supports students with personal, creative, entrepreneurial, academic, and campus engagement projects that center around digital media.
The Associate Director works collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff to offer an array of opportunities for students to explore and engage in digital media, including through workshop series, special events, mentored student employment, and cross-campus collaborations. This role will also collaborate with colleagues to ensure a successful move of the DMC to the new Hopkins Student Center in Fall 2024, including program implementation in the new DMC lab and gaming areas.
The DMC Associate Director reports to the Director of OAI and supervises two full-time staff members in the DMC.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Program Development, Implementation, & Assessment (30%)
Design and teach workshops, classes, and training to prepare students use in emerging technologies in their scholarly and creative works so that they can be creative life-long learners.
Collaborate in planning and implementation of all workshops and special events throughout the year in the DMC lab.
Collaborate with OAI director in program development, strategic planning, and assessment in preparation and response to Student Center spaces and capabilities, envisioning and maximizing DMC potential.
Collaborate and execute programming for sports and gaming.
Implement and oversee ongoing and year-end assessment of DMC programs and offerings to ascertain achievement of learning outcomes as set by the Office of Arts and Innovation and cross-campus colleagues.
Research best practices and peer institutions on an ongoing basis in order to evaluate current student leadership development program offerings and to identify areas of need and strategic growth
Generate ideas and projects that fuse art and technology in new and innovative ways and inspire students to collaborate on interdisciplinary projects with each other, DMC staff, co-curricular and academic partners, the Baltimore community, and professional organizations.
Develop, facilitate, and assess the DMC Pre-Orientation program, a 3-day program for approximately 20 incoming first-year students focused on digital media, the arts, and Baltimore.
Oversee content creation for promotional materials, brochures, leadership resources, etc.
Administrative & IT Management (30%)
Oversee DMC operations including budget, program development, and staffing.
Authorize budget expenditures utilizing knowledge of university purchasing rules and requirements, and vendor regulations regarding software licensing, tracking, and usage.
Assist Office of Arts Director in annual and quarterly budgeting, in collaboration with DMC program coordinator.
Forecast trends in emerging technologies. Explore new uses and interfaces for traditional products and methods while keeping current on professional and consumer hardware, software, and for the needs of the computer-lab style DMC.
Maintain experience and knowledge of a wide variety of media software and hardware such as Adobe, Apple, Microsoft products and systems, server management, networking, disk/storage technologies, digital systems design, room and space design, audio and video equipment specification.
Collaborate with Hopkins [email protected] services, including Student Center IT store and other university organizations to specify and approve institutional technology solutions such as network, wireless, server, communications systems, electronic portfolio applications, digital asset management, and virtual world participation.
Research and propose recommendations for products and services and oversee the hardware, software and circulating equipment purchases. Manage the implementation, integration, training, and maintenance of the above-mentioned systems.
Supervision, Advising, & Training (30%)
Provide professional staff oversight, evaluation, and development in conjunction with office priorities for the DMC including supervision of all professional DMC staff.
Share in the development and daily supervision of DMC student staff, a group of approximately 15 students, in collaboration with professional staff.
Oversee and share in the recruitment, hiring, training, support, and assessment of student employees in collaborations with professional staff.
Oversee advising of digital media focused student organizations and individual student projects.
Other Duties as Assigned (10%)
Oversee and coordinate facilities and operational needs for the DMC.
Oversee and update information available on the DMC university website, Hopkins Groups student platform, ensuring accurate and timely resources and information about programming is widely available.
Establish and reinforce strategic partnerships through participation in committees, professional associations, academic conferences, other educational institutions, research institutes, and technology-oriented businesses.
Represent the DMC for open houses and orientations.
Serve as a university resource on digital media.
Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Preferred candidates will have proficiency in photography and photography related software.
Knowledge of a wide variety of media software and hardware such as Adobe Creative Suite, Final Cut Pro, HD video cameras, audio recording technology, 3-D Studio/Maya, calibration/resolution management, photo printing, web design and production, and the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook).
Requires knowledge of software project management techniques, the ability to manage major projects with a high degree of independence.
Excellent networking, communication, and interpersonal skills, together with the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse pool of university colleagues, alumni, other constituents, and the public.
Fluency in social networking and communication systems.

Master's Degree in related field required. Preferred MFA, MS, or M.Ed.

Five years post graduate experience as a practicing media artist or employment in higher education, media, museum, or a creative technology field.
Three years of progressive increased responsibility in management, supervision, and leadership. Additional experience may substitute for education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
