Department Summary
The Life Sciences Core Education Department is the result of a cooperative effort by faculty, staff, and students from all six life science departments to provide a uniform and integrated set of courses during the first years as an undergraduate. With total undergraduate enrollments exceeding 20,000 students annually, the Life Sciences Core Education Department is responsible for providing required pre-major coursework for students in the Life Sciences, Social Sciences, Physical Sciences, School of Nursing, School of Engineering (Bioengineering), and the proposed undergraduate majors in the School of Public Health. The department also provides optional major and/or General Education Coursework to all undergraduates in the College of Letters and Sciences, and the Schools of Music, Arts and Architecture, Theater, Film, and Television, Public Affairs, and Education. Position Summary
Under the guidance of the Chief Administrative Officer and Department Chair, the Director of Student and Instructional Services manages the academic programs within the Life Sciences Core Education Department. This role encompasses oversight of academic advising services, course scheduling, enrollment processes, and special programs. Additional responsibilities include managing course articulation, instructional planning, budgeting, and providing support to instructors and TAs. The Director supervises two staff members and collaborates on hiring TAs for Life Sciences courses. Success in this position requires independence, initiative, and professional discretion.
Salary & Compensation

Knowledge of campus enrollment policies, computing systems and procedures. (Required)
Knowledge of database software, MS Office Suite, PDF software, Wordpress, and HTML. (Required)
Skill in interacting with persons of various social, cultural, ethnic, economic and educational backgrounds. (Required)
Superior interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative, professional, yet friendly working relationships with and convey information clearly and accurately to all levels of campus administrators, faculty, fellows, students, visitors and outside vendors. (Required)
Ability to communicate and effectively clearly with discretion and tact with faculty, staff, students on sensitive or confidential matters, in both oral and written form. (Required)
Leadership skill as demonstrated by exercise of mature judgment in independent decision making without close supervision. (Required)
Demonstrated persistence to follow up with and follow through to completion all assigned work in order to meet deadlines. (Required)
Knowledge of general academic requirements and regulations for undergraduate UCLA students, including FERPA regulations. (Preferred)
Knowledge of UCLA system software: OASIS, MY UCLA, CCLE, DARS, counselor desktop, UCPath and electronic gradebook. (Preferred)
Knowledge of Life Sciences Core Curriculum courses, requirements and policies. (Preferred)
Ability to correctly advise undergraduate students on the full range of academic questions. (Preferred)
Ability to operate Scantron grading system and copying equipment. (Preferred)
Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations
Bachelor's Degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training (Required)
