Department Summary
This position is based in the Bruin Resource Center (BRC), a Student Affairs Office at UCLA whose overarching mission is to assist students in effectively navigating the university by providing information, referrals, and support. In the service of this mission, the BRC provides specialized services and programs to the following student populations: current & former foster youth, students in recovery, students who have been impacted by the criminal justice system, students with dependents, transfer and non-traditional students, and undocumented students. In support of UCLA's commitment to strengthen the academic pipeline and increase access to higher education among underrepresented, disadvantaged youth, UCLA Student Affairs has partnered with the First Star organization to create the BGSA for foster youth. Situated on the UCLA campus, the BGSA provides high school foster youth with an intensive college prep program that includes a 2-4 week summer residential experience and monthly Saturday Academies during the school year. The Bruin Guardian Scholars Academy Academic Case Manager/ Program Coordinator focuses on the success of current and former high school foster youth served by the BGSA by identifying, accessing, developing, and/or providing institutional and external supports. The Bruin Guardian Scholars Academy Academic Case Manager/ Program Coordinator is responsible for coordinating with DCFS, high school administration and counselors, and other community stakeholders as appropriate to address the needs of students served by the BGSA in areas that may include academics, family relationships, social adjustment, socio-emotional wellbeing through areas of assessment, consultation intervention, referrals, and follow-up services. The position assists by identifying and accessing off-campus community resources available to these students that will help them address the specific barriers they experience to succeeding in high school. Assists in the training and supervision of student staff, volunteers, and mentors. Assists in the management of program administration including monitoring and reporting; researching program vendors and costs; working with HR and Purchasing staff to meet purchasing deadlines; maintaining program records; compiling and writing program reports. Assists with the development of the program logic model, evaluation measures, and assessment and evaluation tools.
Salary & Compensation
*UCLA provides a full pay range. Knowledge and experience working with a diverse student population, and sensitive to culture, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status. (Required)
Knowledge of current issues regarding foster care impacted students. (Required)
Demonstrated skill in listening, counseling, and referring students to individuals, offices, or agencies, to resolve problems. (Required)
Current knowledge of community services and resources for foster care impacted students. (Required)
Ability to provide planning, assessing, coordinating and implementation of services to enhance each student's academic, social and emotional well-being. (Required)
Must be able to work with high school students to develop strategies to change behavior or cope with difficult situations. Have knowledge of community resources and be able to refer students to services such as support groups or other mental health professionals. (Required)
Must be able to work occasional nights and weekends. (Required)
Skills using word-processing, spreadsheet, presentation, electronic mail, and other software in a windows environment. (Required)
Ability to multitask and handle changing priorities and conflicting deadlines. (Required)
Knowledge of university policy and procedures, including policies governing the use of university funds and facilities. (Preferred)
Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations
Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training (Required)
Advanced degree from an accredited institution in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Public Health or a related field. (Preferred)
