The Ivy College of Business at Iowa State University is looking for an associate director of career services. Reporting to the associate dean for academic affairs, the associate director leads the college's undergraduate career services office and all strategic initiatives involving student job placement and industry relations. The associate director supervises eight full-time staff members and several student office assistants and graduate assistants. The position is responsible for selecting, hiring, training, developing, and assigning career services support staff, as well as the management of the unit’s budget.
The associate director oversees student professional development via classroom teaching, workshops, and career-related events. This role includes direct career coaching of students and support for Ivy alumni seeking new opportunities. Additionally, the position is responsible for collecting, interpreting, and disclosing employment data for institutional needs and AACSB accreditation.
The associate director is responsible for fostering corporate and industry connections to strengthen Ivy's relationships in Iowa and beyond with the goal of improving career opportunities for students. The associate director manages employers’ relations, plans and execute fall and spring career fairs along with other recruitment events, assists companies in their internships and hiring needs, and develops new employer partnerships.
Due to the role's high external visibility, the associate director should be comfortable managing diverse relationships requiring strong communication, public speaking, and interpersonal skills. The ideal applicant should have a thorough understanding of the unique needs of six different department in the college, be able to support Ivy’s student-focused approach to higher education management and thrive in a dynamic and innovative work setting.
Example of Duties • Manages a career services program at the college level. • Manages a budget and sets policy and procedure. • Represents a college, its programs, and its students to employers, industry, and academic constituents. • Develops and delivers professional development and assessment programming. • Markets the college and university to employers. • Develops and maintains relationships with employers and professionals • Collecting and disclosing employment data for institutional needs and AACSB accreditation. • Evaluates effectiveness of programs and services offered. • Supervises multiple staff in support of career services, including hiring, firing, training, leading, assigning work, etc. • Will advise students or alumni concerning career management, employment, services, or resources.
Level Guidelines • Provides input into annual departmental objectives and action plans • Accountable for achievement of key annual objectives for a department • May provide input into institution policy within area of functional expertise • Responsible for functional output of a department or work team • Manages subordinate staff • Has full management responsibility for direct reports, specifically the authority to hire, fire, and counsel • May provide input to the budgeting process • Requests approval for financial actions beyond a limited scope • May provide input into financial decisions that impact department or work area

Required Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree and 7 years of related experience
Preferred Qualifications:
At least 7 years of progressive experience in career services or student affairs, ideally within higher education. Experience in overseeing student-facing career development programs. Demonstrated experience managing a team, including hiring, training, and performance evaluation. Experience with budget management and strategic planning. Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with employers, including planning career fairs, recruitment events, and internship programs. Experience planning and executing large-scale career fairs and employer networking
