Job Summary: | The La Follette School of Public Affairs is highly ranked among graduate degree public policy programs and enjoys a worldwide reputation for research and teaching. Our mission is to train leaders and conduct research to inspire evidence-based policymaking and to advance the public good. The School seeks an energetic, collaborative individual to join our undergraduate team who provide advising and administrative services for our undergraduate certificate candidates (Public Policy and Health Policy) and students for our future major in public policy.
The undergraduate academic advisor assists students in developing a coherent program of study and select courses appropriate to their personal and professional goals. Our undergraduate certificates and new major offer students an unparalleled blend of skills training, theoretical learning and real-world practice.
In addition to their home departments, advisors in L&S are a part of an active advising community and interdependent system. During the academic year, L&S advisors meet monthly as a consortium for information sharing and ongoing training. All L&S advisors also contribute to the campus Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) program, in summer and in January, to advise new L&S first-year and transfer students. |
Responsibilities: | Engages students in decision making processes and promotes appropriate and responsible choices on academic matters such as course selection and degree requirements. Maintains appropriate confidentiality, updates student advising records, and contributes to the development and delivery of academic advising related events and programs. Works to ensure students receive accurate, timely, and holistic advising services in support of promoting student success, retention, and program completion. Strives to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive work environment. - 15% Receives, processes, and responds to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures
- 40% Serves as a main point of contact for students and provides information about educational options and academic requirements; assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, and values to match appropriate field of study/career options, and refers students to appropriate institutional resources
- 5% Implements academic advising events such as workshops, panel discussions, and guest speakers
- 5% Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records and processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies
- 5% Maintains expertise with advised curriculum and may assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum
- 10% Proactively engages students as needed
- 5% Participates in the campus-wide advising community providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college
- 5% Coordinates outreach to UW students and campus units to generate interest in the major, including relationship- building with underrepresented groups.
- 5% Engages with committees and project groups focused on operational, functional, or programmatic efforts both within AAS and in collaboration with campus partners.
- 5% Lead our department communications to current La Follette students via Undergraduate Bulletin, course visits, and digest emails.

- Minimum of 1 year cumulative direct student services experience in higher education providing academic advising, supervising, and/or mentoring students - Demonstrated ability to build rapport with students and knowledge of approaches to student development - Ability to share complex information in a clear and organized manner in both verbal and written forms to a variety of audiences - Demonstrated ability to approach challenges with a positive attitude and solution focused mindset - Excellent organizational skills as well as strong attention to accuracy and detail - Basic computer literacy and willingness to adapt and learn new software/platforms - Promoting a positive, respectful, and socially just work and learning environment - Ability to work independently and contribute meaningfully to a team |

Salary: | Minimum $50,000 ANNUAL (12 months) Depending on Qualifications The typical starting salary for this position is $50,000 - $63,000 depending on qualifications and experience. Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays and paid time off; competitive insurances and saving accounts; and retirement benefits. |
