About the Department of Computational Biology
The Department of Computational Biology (CB) is a joint department with three participating colleges
including the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS), Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science, and the College of Arts and Sciences. The department consists of eight full-time faculty members, with expertise in computer science, genomics, systems biology, population genetics, and modeling. They apply these skills to a wide range of exciting problems in the life sciences. The department administers the Computational Biology undergraduate concentration within the Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and is home to the Computational Biology PhD graduate degree program. Additionally, the faculty in the department are members of the Computational Biology graduate field, as well as several other graduate fields offering M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees.
The Opportunity
As the Graduate Field Assistant and Undergraduate Program Coordinator within the CALS Office of Academic Programs (OAP), you will play a vital role in supporting the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) and providing guidance to graduate students and faculty members in the Field of Computational Biology. This position involves collaboration with various teams across CALS, numerous programs and units on campus, and other university partners focused on student support and success.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide comprehensive administrative support to the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) in the Field of Computational Biology, including policy interpretation, communication, and application.
- Serve as a liaison between graduate students, the Graduate School, the Bursar Office, the Office of Global Learning, College Admissions and Registrar's Offices, and the DGS.
- Coordinate the graduate admissions process and assist in recruitment activities.
- Represent the Field of Computational Biology at meetings and events.
- Ensure timely student registration, particularly for students receiving aid.
- Create and update publications and electronic information relevant to the field, including website content.
- Coordinate and process exam schedules, committee nominations, and other relevant graduate forms for students.
- Work with the Graduate School on new faculty nominations, resignations, or retirements.
- Provide administrative support to department faculty and teaching staff, including processing travel reimbursements and initiating purchases.
- Partner with the Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) to support all aspects of the undergraduate concentration in Computational Biology.
- Coordinate and maintain the online Courses of Study Directory.
- Schedule exams through the University Registrar's Office and secure rooms for classes/sections.
- Coordinate grade submissions and provide support to undergraduate students and faculty advisors.
- Serve as the primary contact person for all matters related to the undergraduate program, answering questions from current and prospective students and their families.
This is a part-time (20 hours/week) Contract College position that is based in Ithaca, NY. This position is on-site, but will allow for a hybrid work arrangement during student breaks.

- Communicate effectively, both written and oral.
- Have excellent organizational experience.
- Know how to balance conflicting priorities, make informed choices, and use sound judgment in completing urgent tasks.
- Be flexible and receptive to new ideas and approaches. Experience in handling confidential information with utmost discretion and integrity.

- Experience in an academic environment is preferred.
