The Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs is the University’s chief academic officer, second in charge of campus operations. The Office of the Provost provides academic and administrative leadership in all matters of curriculum and program development, the advancement of teaching, and the support of research and other scholarly and creative work in the academic community. The office is responsible for the review and approval of all academic programs and policies and has the authority in all matters about the appointment, promotion, and compensation of faculty personnel. Personnel administration for all faculty is the responsibility of this office. Reporting to the Provost are the deans, faculties, and staff of the College of Arts & Sciences, the College of Visual and Performing Arts, five professional schools (the Joseph M. Bryan School of Business & Economics, the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, the Schools of Education, Health & Human Sciences, and Nursing), and the Graduate School. In addition, the Global Engagement Office, the Middle College program, the University Libraries, the University Teaching and Learning Commons, Lloyd International Honors College, and the Divisions of Student Affairs, Student Success, and Research and Engagement all report to the Provost. This office provides support and staffing for the campus structure of faculty governance.
Reporting to the Chancellor, the Provost will serve as a champion of UNCG’s faculty, demonstrating a leadership style that is transparent and engaged. This individual will possess the knowledge and experience to develop successful strategies that strengthen academic programs, their delivery, and their impact. The Provost has 20 direct reports and oversees Academic Affairs (which includes the divisions of Student Affairs, Research and Engagement, and Student Success), with a total budget of more than $153 million (FY23-24). The successful candidate will be resourceful, imaginative, and forward-thinking, with a record of collaborative academic and administrative oversight. An earned doctorate or other terminal degree is required, as is a record of scholarship and teaching commensurate with appointment to the rank of full professor.
Minimum Qualifications
• An earned doctorate from an accredited institution in one of the disciplines represented in the University; • Teaching, scholarly, research/creative activity, and service credentials meriting appointment at the rank of full professor with tenure in a department at the University; • A minimum of five years in academic leadership roles in a university setting, preferably at an institution that grants doctoral-level degrees; • Experience working with and ensuring the success of a diverse student body and workforce; • A demonstrated commitment to the teacher-scholar model for faculty members; • Experience working with complex academic budgets; • Demonstrated commitment to shared governance; • Demonstrated success in organizational leadership; • Experience working with a variety of constituencies to create and support mutually beneficial partnerships, development opportunities, and/or other externally focused initiatives; • Highest standards of integrity and ethics, even under challenging circumstances; • A fair, collaborative, and transparent leadership style that will engender trust among all members of the UNCG community; • The ability to communicate well and work cooperatively and effectively with administrators, faculty, students, staff, and external stakeholders; an appreciation and understanding of the need for collaboration and synergy among these groups to make critical decisions on academic priorities and the allocation of resources; • An accomplished leader with the experience, vision, and energy to manage organizational change, incorporating UNCG’s values and mission.
