Crisis Counselor

Job Summary
The Crisis Counselor serves as a member of the Crisis Intervention Team and works in collaboration with police officers responding to individuals in crisis who may need mental health services and additional care. The Crisis Counselor is responsible for conducting assessments, offering intervention, and coordinating care.
Duties & Responsibilities

• Respond to in-progress calls with law enforcement in order to determine level of care required for individuals in crisis with a strong emphasis on suicide intervention and prevention;
• Assist law enforcement when responding to potential individuals in crisis by conducting an assessment, offering effective and efficient interventions, and coordinating care;
• Prevent unnecessary hospitalization or arrest of individuals with mental illness;
• Assess individual treatment needs related to psychiatric, medical, social, and emotional care and follow-up after involuntary commitment to ensure engagement and access to services;
• Work in collaboration with law enforcement officials following their guidance and direction in respect to on-scene safety and protocol;
• Coordinate medical response with law enforcement when medical safety is an issue;
• Access an individuals risk for danger to self or others and intervene accordingly;
• Exercise sound clinical judgment in determining an individuals ability to remain safely in the community. Build relationships with frequent contacts and follow-up on their well-being;
• Develop a clinically sound safety plan in the least restrictive setting, only utilizing involuntary commitment when all other options have been exhausted. Develop collaborative crisis treatment and discharge plans that meet the needs of the individual in crisis and law enforcement. Document all encounters proficiently by end of shift. Complete accurate and precise supporting clinical documentation including treatment plans for all crisis individuals responded to. Staff cases with supervisors as needed.

Additional Physical Demands
Shift work, includes evening and weekend hours. Shift may fluctuate on an as needed basis.

Travel Requirements
80% Crisis counselor will be driving around in a vehicle with an officer on shift during most of their shift.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university. Crisis intervention experience. A minimum of two years of professional experience which includes assessing physical, mental, social, and economic needs of a diverse community; OR one year of experience in case management, social work, mental health, or substance abuse. Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's Degree in Social Work, Human Services, Counseling, Psychology or a related field from an accredit college or university.

Experience working with a diverse student population including, but not limited to, socioeconomic factors, cultural backgrounds, ethnicity, and spoken languages. Suicide intervention and prevention experience.

Trained in de-escalation techniques.

• Demonstrated ability to work independently and work collaboratively as a team.
• Adheres to professionally recognized ethical standards of care.
• Knowledge of precise, accurate, efficient, and coherent clinical writing skills.
• Knowledge of varied individual and group counseling theories and techniques.
• Ability to communicate and work with other services agencies in the community.
• Knowledge of individual, group, family, and crisis treatment approaches and and their application to individuals with emotional, behavioral and/or substance use disorder problems.
• Knowledge of social work theory and practice.
• Knowledge of social service, mental health, substance abuse, educational, vocational, and rehabilitative programs available in the county and state.
• Ability to render social work and counseling services professionally and effectively with individuals.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 10/28/2024. The salary range for this position is $55,000-$65,000.
