Position Summary
Under the guidance of the Director of Training and Prevention, the Prevention Coordinator is responsible for the coordination, development, implementation, and evaluation of sexual, gender-based, and intimate partner violence; sexual and street harassment primary and secondary prevention training and educational activities. The incumbent will participate in the development of strategic plans, goals, and measurable objectives for violence prevention programs and services on the Morningside Campus. The Prevention Coordinator will collaborate with departmental colleagues to plan, review, implement, and evaluate theory-and-evidence-informed prevention strategies. The incumbent will have a specialization in intersectional identity and inclusion. This will include a focus on incorporating a framework that considers and aligns the interplay of gender, power, racial, and sexual identity in all training and prevention workshops, events, outreach efforts, and community-building initiatives focused on gender and power-based violence, sexual and intimate partner violence, and stalking.
Additionally, this position will spearhead the Men???s Engagement activities and will partner with the Director of Training and Prevention and Assistant Director in the coordination of the Men???s Engagement Task Force, events and programming focused on the inclusion of topics around men and masculinity, and partnership building efforts across the university, increasing student engagement around the work of power and gender-based violence prevention. All efforts outlined above will be designed with the goal of creating community-based culture change.
This is an essential onsite role. Frequent evening and weekend hours are required. Some hybrid work options may be considered.
Responsibilities
Prevention Services (35%)
Participate in the development of strategic plans, goals, and measurable objectives for prevention programs and services for SVR.
Assist the Director of Training & Prevention in developing objectives and activities based on departmental goals, including both short and long-range education and outreach plans.
Plan, implement, and evaluate theory and evidence-informed prevention strategies.
Manage administrative-related aspects of outreach efforts and prevention programs for SVR including maintaining records and evaluation-related data and reports.
In collaboration with SVR staff, campus colleagues, and community partners, coordinate, develop, and deliver community-based primary and secondary prevention programming directed at the prevention of sexual and intimate partner violence. This will include athletes, fraternities, and sororities, Undergraduate and Graduate student organizations, as well as Undergraduate and Graduate Academic departments.
Facilitation & Culture Change (30%)
Work towards community-based culture change by focusing intersectional identities in prevention content, programming, and activities with the goal of inclusion.
Create opportunities through training, prevention, and outreach efforts to include marginalized populations with the goal of increased involvement within SVR (volunteers, Interns, Helpline Advocates), engagement in events/activities, and destigmatization of survivor status.
Serve as backup facilitator for the SVR peer educator volunteer program and support the Prevention Coordinator with the Sexual Violence Response peer education programming efforts.
In collaboration with the Training and Prevention team, coordinate the planning, curriculum, implementation, logistics, and evaluation of the New Student Orientation Program (NSOP), Club Refuel Student Leader Training, and Sexual Respect Initiative for SVR.
Serve as facilitator or co-facilitator for training activities and provide technical support accordingly.
Collaborative Partnership & Capacity Building (30%)
Work in partnership with the Training and Prevention team in recruitment, selection, orientation, training, supervision, retention, and development of new and existing volunteers and student-staff Peer Educators, Interns, etc.
In partnership with the Training and Prevention team, manage and coordinate student-driven institution-wide events or educational programs (Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Relationship Violence Awareness Month, Stalking Awareness Month, etc.).
Participate in university and community committees and task forces as needed.
Collaborate with key stakeholders including Columbia Health colleagues, undergraduate and graduate colleagues, Student Affairs, community-based programs, and other key stakeholders to develop a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to violence prevention for students.
Build networks of allies to be involved in gender and power-based violence training and prevention efforts, including participation in events.
Maintain and develop a network of contacts and actively see out and participate in professional development activities to keep current on best practices, and research literature pertinent to the field.
Minimum 3 years experience in sexual violence education, prevention, and risk strategies, health education, counseling or closely related field.
Prior experience developing and implementing violence prevention and education programs targeting young adults, and engaging marginalized communities in this work, including men as bystanders and allies.
Expertise and analysis around identifying at the intersection of gender, power, racial, and sexual identities.
Experience working with survivors of power and gender-based violence.
Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters and discretion and work effectively with students, faculty, and administrative constituencies.
Must demonstrate excellent written and communication skills.
Must be well organized and detail-oriented with ability to multi-task and prioritize competing demands.
Prior experience facilitating one-on-one sessions, small and large group presentations, workshops, and trainings.
Ability to work in a multi-racial environment with a commitment to social justice practice.
Requires strong computer skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Master???s or advanced degree.
Experience working in a college/university setting.
Education or experience that demonstrates quantitative and qualitative research skills such as research design, survey development, focus group design and facilitation, data analysis, and interpretation.
Content and curriculum design.
Designing visual tools/aids for slide deck presentations and hand-outs.
Record of applying issues of diversity and social justice to a prevention practice.
