Position Summary:
The primary location of this position is the Cullowhee, NC campus.
The Associate Director and is part of the leadership of the Office of Student Retention and will report to the Director of the Office of Student Retention. The Associate Director will supervise two Student Success Specialists.
The Office of Student Retention implements targeted interventions to support student success that are guided by evidence-based practices and institutional data and analytics. The Associate Director contributes to these efforts through coordination for the first-year experience course (USI 130), academic learning communities, and other high impact practices.
Responsibilities include:
First Year Experience Course - coordinate FYE course including curriculum development, instructor recruitment, and instructor training;
Academic Recovery Course - LC 101 is an academic recovery course for students on academic warning. The role will include curriculum development, teaching the course, instructor training, assessment, and continuous improvement;
Academic Learning Communities - coordinate ALCs for first-year students including assisting instructors with developing new ALC themes, selecting the ALC to be offered, supporting instructors during implementation, and assisting with student selection criteria;
One Book Committee Co-Chair - oversee the selection of the campus One Book and incorporation into FYE courses;
Supervision - supervise two Student Success Specialists;
New Student Convocation - assist the division of student success in planning new student convocation
Retention and Persistence initiatives - create, implement, and support initiatives to increase semester-to-semester enrollment, decrease time to graduation, and advance the rate of degree completion;
Assessment - Assess and evaluate programming and interventions for continuous improvement;
Office duties - assist with academic standing, appeals, term withdrawals, and re-admission after suspension/dismissal.
The Associate Director role is highly collaborative, and the selected candidate must be able to collaborate with faculty and staff in the academic colleges, student affairs, academic support units, and athletics, as well as with public relations to strengthen new students' ties to the institution and promote academic success and persistence at the university. An institutional perspective, excellent communication, and consensus-building skills, as well as an ability to interpret significant student data and generate appropriate action plans resulting from data collection are essential.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required for this position: Minimum Qualifications:
Must be legally eligible to work in the United States without the need for employment sponsorship.
Master's degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel, or related field is required.
Three (3) years experience in education supporting students, including student advising, coaching, or student support services
Demonstrated previous or current teaching experience
Demonstrated experience supporting diverse student populations and collaborating with diverse stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications:
Curriculum Development: Demonstrated experience in collaborating with faculty and instructors to design and implement courses or academic learning communities, as evidenced by specific projects or outcomes.
Program Assessment and Evaluation: Proven track record of conducting program assessments and evaluations, with documented examples of continuous improvement initiatives based on findings.
Application of Student Development Theories: Experience in applying student development theories and conducting data analysis to inform and enhance student success initiatives, supported by quantitative or qualitative data.
Interpersonal and Communication Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, as demonstrated by feedback from colleagues or stakeholders, and the ability to manage multiple projects effectively, with examples of successful project management.
Problem-Solving Skills: Evidence of creative and data-driven problem-solving abilities, including specific instances where innovative solutions were implemented based on data analysis.
Commitment to Student Success: Clear commitment to student success, demonstrated through participation in initiatives, programs, or activities aimed at improving student outcomes, with measurable results.
