Under supervision of the Assistant Dean, provide academic counseling to university undergraduate students, provide in-depth event planning, provide backup management to the Biology Academic Success Center's (BASC) student/visitor check-in receptionist area. Provide support for undergraduate program reviews, course approvals, catalog updates, and related activities. Monitor progress toward the completion of degree requirements. Analyze and solve complex academic problems and refer students to appropriate campus community resources.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience with undergraduate curricular elements and structures such as courses, units, prerequisites, majors and minors, with experience examining and assessing college transcripts and computing or reviewing online computations of grade point averages and grade point balances.
Experience with advising tools and technology, including the ability to develop expertise in using software and information management systems
Knowledge of multicultural dynamics within a university setting and the academic environment and the pressures encountered by students.
Ability to interpret and apply complex rules and regulations governing undergraduate education.
Interpersonal communication skills to interact positively, cooperatively, and professionally with team members, administrators, staff, students, and the general public all of varying ages, cultural backgrounds, and perspectives.
Organizational skills, including skills to prioritize work meet critical timelines, and manage multiple tasks with concurrent and conflicting priorities.
Knowledge of state and federal laws governing the confidentiality of student records
Preferred Qualifications
Baccalaureate degree in biology, student advising, or related science or advising field, or equivalent education and/or advising experience.
Experience supervising student staff in a variety of venues and circumstances.
Experience identifying and determining appropriate levels of advising or referral services for individual students, providing immediate crisis counseling, triage, and referrals to students in academic, financial, or personal difficulty.
Skills to analyze complex information or problems objectively and derive logical conclusions to provide a sound basis for establishing priorities and selecting appropriate courses of action for pursuit or recommendations to others.

This is an essential position to BASC operations. BASC advisers play significant roles in the delivery of college-wide undergraduate academic advising services and in instructional support for the college's undergraduate programs. The scope of the responsibility for the BASC unit is College-wide extending to the separate degrees offered within the college and approximately 6,000+ undergraduate students directly administered by the College of Biological Sciences.
