Description of Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Senior Associate Director for the Residential Experience, the Associate Director of Residential Education is responsible for providing leadership and oversight of the residential learning initiatives for the Department of Residence Life and Housing. Residence Life and Housing (RLH) leads the development of the strong residential character of the SUNY Oswego campus and provides a common experience for most of the undergraduate community. Situated within the Division of Student Affairs, RLH plays a critical role in furthering the mission and vision of the Division and in achieving institutional enrollment goals through cutting edge business services, direct interface with the holistic needs of students and their families, and nationally recognized residential education practices. RLH works to advance student attainment of General Education goals with residence hall initiatives organized through a curricular approach to residential education.
The Associate Director is a key member of the Residence Life and Housing Leadership team. The Associate Director for Residential Education will develop, implement, coordinate, and assess a residential curriculum model and the living learning community framework consistent with the strategic goals of the College. The Associate Director will work collaboratively with a wide range of campus partners to support the overall success of maintaining a holistic residential community focused on student learning and success.
Responsibilities
Leadership & Supervision
Provide direct supervision to one live-on Assistant Director of Residence Life and Housing (full-time live-on mid-level management professional responsible for supervision of several residence halls) and indirect supervision to the Residence Hall Directors, Graduate Assistants, and Resident Student Staff of their assigned residential area.
Provide direct supervision to one graduate assistant responsible for the growth and development of the community councils within Residence Life and Housing.
The Associate Director will ensure that staff in their line of supervision are onboarded, trained, and evaluated to promote personal and professional growth and development.
Provide professional development and coaching opportunities.
Engage in performance management processes for supervisees and provide timely feedback during one-on-ones, and staff meetings
Meet individually with the assistant director on a weekly basis.
Develop and enact a plan to foster team development and manage team conflict.
Maintain approachability and availability for all staff (including student staff) in their line of supervision.
Ensure that direct reports develop strong supervision skills.
Engage in culturally competent supervision practices.
Supervise central office support staff in collaboration with other central staff.
Residential Curriculum
Use research based best practices to lead the departmental residential education program aligned with division and institution goals.
Introduce, reinforce, and emphasize best practices for the development, implementation, and assessment of residential learning initiatives that support student needs and meet college and division strategic goals.
Develop a residential curriculum aligned with institution mission and general education goals, the division's learning domains, and specific to the learning and development needs of first year and upper-division students.
Collaborate with the RLH Leadership team to ensure that the mission, vision, and values for the department align with an educational priority statement and associated learning outcomes for the residential curriculum.
Train staff (professional and student) in their responsibilities related to the implementation of a residential curriculum, program development, and assessment.
Develop and implement a department assessment plan related to the residential education program and department initiatives that enhance student learning.
Analyze staff curriculum reports and share trends and opportunities for community and resident engagement activities.
Coordinate and enhance campus traditions related to Residence Life and Housing programs and annual events.
Identify collaborative opportunities with other college units to support student learning and success in the residence halls.
Collaborate with Academic Affairs in the facilitation of departmental involvement and support in retention efforts of our students including the Starfish program.
Coordinate the Community Council framework and train and meet regularly with organization advisors.
Living Learning Community (LLC) Initiatives
Lead the development, coordination and implementation of LLC programs intended to enhance the student residential living experience.
Establish and maintain key faculty and campus resource partnerships to support LLC programs.
Identify and develop programmatic, staffing, and financial efforts that will generate a holistic LLC experience for students connecting social, academic and career elements.
Evaluate the LLC program on an ongoing basis to ensure each LLC is meeting the desired goals and learning outcomes.
Plan and create standard data report documents to showcase appropriate outcomes and data to various stakeholders.
Remain current in emerging LLC trends and programs that add value to the residential living experience.
Provide guidance and resources to staff (professional and student) in their responsibilities related to the LLC program.
Other
Provide on a rotational basis on-call response addressing student emergency and crisis situations as they arise.
Lead the department's annual assessment and evaluation process.
Work collaboratively with the Marketing & Communications Coordinator to promote LLC spaces, the residential curriculum, and Community Council
Strategically plan, monitor, and administer the spending of the departmental residential education budget.
Facilitate departmental involvement and support in College-wide initiatives related to Laker Launch/Welcome Week, OzFest, and other large-scale programs.
Work closely with RLH Leadership to assist in the opening and closing of all campus residence halls each academic semester
Participate in divisional college committees and task forces as a member or chair.
Other related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements: Required Qualifications:
Master's degree in Higher Education, counseling, or related field.
Five or more years of professional experience working with college students.
Strong knowledge of student development theory.
Experience in facilitating a residential curriculum and supporting living learning communities.
