The basics of this position:
The Academic, Career, and Transfer Advising department is hiring Student Mentors. TRIO Student Mentors will work with STLCC students and create an atmosphere of friendly and reliable service, providing an accessible and credible resource for STLCC students about academic, career, and transfer options. Assist with a diverse range of administrative support services for ACT Advising. Act as a role model STLCC students, demonstrating study strategies and habits necessary for success.
What you'll do:
• Represent STLCC and ACT Advising at STLCC events.
• Empower students to understand content material and to use effective strategies.
• Assist with the facilitation workshops on academic success, college awareness and career readiness topics.
• Complete contact forms, including student attendance at sessions, accurately and on time.
• Maintain confidentiality of students’ personal and academic information and records as per FERPA and college guidelines.
• Perform office tasks such as filing, making copies and scheduling appointments.
• Attend required training activities and scheduled events.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Education, experience, and other requirements:
• Must be currently enrolled or registered at St. Louis Community College and making progress toward completion of a degree and/or transfer study program as defined in Board Policy. • Must maintain enrollment while employed in this position. • Must be in good academic and disciplinary standing with the College. • Must have demonstrated ability to relate well with students, faculty, and administration.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Good interpersonal communication skills with an emphasis on listening and assessing the needs to diverse learners. • Effective time management skills; punctual and capable of completing job responsibilities in a timely manner. • Patient and passionate about working with middle and/or high school students. • Demonstrates professional behavior in language, dress, and demeanor. • Proficiency with computers, Microsoft Office, and email. • Sufficient technical skill to conduct online or virtual workshops as needed. • Ability to work in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
