Brief Summary of Job Duties
UCSB Residential & Community Living is responsible for the overall student life program in 9 residence halls and 8 apartment complexes (11,500+ residents) with a focus on student development and leadership programs, and conduct and accountability.
Reporting to the Student Leadership Programs Manager, the Advisor enhances the overarching Student Leadership program through advising and supporting the leadership development of UCSB students, including the Residential Housing Association (RHA), National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH), and Hall Councils.
The Student Leadership Program Advisor will play an integral role with the advising and leadership development of UCSB students, to include establishing student government and programming bodies for all-campus housing communities from the larger housing-wide organizations (such as RHA) to representatives on individual floors.
This position provides an exceptional opportunity to develop skills in student advising, gain exposure to the field of student leadership and development, participate and contribute to a variety of student programs, and receive mentoring in career development and potential career paths.
Job Functions and Percentages of Time:
ADVISING - 40%
Serve as staff co-advisor to the Residential Housing Association (RHA) an organization of 40 student leaders and annual budget of $120,000.
Serve as staff co-advisor to the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH)
Responsible for advising students in various roles, including RHA Executive Board, Hall Council Presidents & Representatives-at-Large.
Attend weekly RHA Coordinating Board, NRHH General Meeting, and Executive Board Meetings.
Assist in the coordination and advising of major student initiatives throughout the year, such as Week of Welcome, All Hall Brawl, and the Welcome & Finals Kits fundraiser.
Serve as Advisor to major RHA committees, as assigned.
Serve as delegation advisor to 1-3 regional and national collegiate conferences for student leaders that include, the Pacific Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls (PACURH) and the National Association of College and University Residence Halls (NACURH) conferences.
RESIDENTIAL LEADERSHIP PROGRAM - 25%
Assist the Student Leadership Programs Manager in developing student leadership trainings for members of RHA, NRHH, hall council advisors, and hall council representatives.
Provide support to Assistant Resident Directors in advising their respective community councils in areas of elections, meetings, retreats, programming, & advocacy.
Assist the Student Leadership Programs Manager in the creation & development of programs & initiatives that support the residential curriculum model
Develop partnership between the Office of Student Engagement and Leadership (SEAL) and the Division of Student Affairs in the area of student leadership
ORGANIZATIONAL INVOLVEMENT - 20%
Assist the Student Leadership Programs Manager in developing and leading professional development workshops for the Assistant Resident Directors
Serve on various Residential & Community Living Committees, as assigned.
Serve as a conduct hearing officer and restorative justice facilitator as needed
Serve on HDAE Committees as assigned.
ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT - 15%
Assist in the creation of the RHA manuals and resource materials
Assist in the creation and development of organization and position specific transition reports
Conduct assessment and evaluation of student initiatives
Coordinate travel in accordance with university policy to various student leadership conferences
Purchase supplies and monitor budgets accordingly.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
At least 2 years of work experience in University Housing, or Student Affairs
Experience with planning and implementing programs/activities
Experience in counseling or advising students
Ability to work independently, anticipate job requirements, prioritize and coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously.
Ability to work confidently with diverse student populations and is committed to practicing and promoting inclusivity.
Commitment to creating communities where residents feel a deep sense of belonging
Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues throughout a large, multifunctional department.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's Degree in higher education or related field
Experience in counseling or advising students
Self-directed with strong time management and administrative skills preferred.
Knowledge of University policy preferred; particularly knowledge of risk management & liability policies preferred.
