The Office of International Students and Scholars at Teachers College, Columbia University is seeking an Associate Director who will take initiatives in ensuring smooth operations of the daily functions of a team of international education professionals responsible for providing immigration advisement and guidance to international students and scholars. The Associate Director will also be responsible for providing advising to international students and scholars.
Job Summary/Basic Function:
Reporting to the Director of the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS), the Associate Director will be responsible for coordinating support for international students and scholars on immigration related matters, assisting with immigration regulation compliance, and general office management.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Advising and Compliance ● Serve as an F-1 Designated School Official (DSO) and J-1 Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) ● Advise international students and scholars on complex immigration related matters ● Refer complex student/scholar cases to the Director for advisement and consultation ● In partnership with the Director, oversee and monitor the maintenance of data integrity and functionality of the internal database relevant to TC’s compliance and reporting requirements ● Update and maintain student/scholar records in SEVIS and batch system ● Assist with office outreach and communication in matters related to F/J students and scholars
Program Development ● Develop presentations for workshops ● Manage and award conference travel funds for international students ● Collaborate with other offices on programs designed around supporting international students
Strategic Management and Leadership ● Support the director in strategic planning, policy development, and assessment of OISS mission/goals ● Monitor annual budget and provide recommendations to the Director ● Assist the Director to monitor and process purchasing requisitions, reimbursements, budget transfers, and run budget related reports ● Assess current office policy and practice and make recommendations to Director ● Assist in administrative interpretation of policy procedures in areas of student success and compliance ● Monitor, maintain and improve student experiences in immigration related support services/documentation ● Serve as liaison between OISS and academic/administrative departments ● Assist with collection, analysis, and interpretation of student data and survey ● Serve as point-of-contact in the absence of the Director

Minimum Qualifications:
● Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education, training and experience ● 3-5 years previous international advising experience, preferably in higher education institution ● Knowledge of Google Suite and Microsoft Office and ability to learn and adapt to new technology. ● Previously served as DSO and ARO ● Highly organized and detail oriented; ability to problem solve and to handle multiple responsibilities in a busy international services office ● Demonstrated expertise and knowledge of F-1 and J-1 federal regulations ● Proven record of integrating policies and compliance to every-day business practice ● US citizen or US permanent resident required to serve as DSO and ARO ● Exemplary communication skills (verbal and written) and a collaborative, transparent approach to problem-solving ● Ability to work with a high level of accuracy in a fast-paced environment with multiple deadlines ● Ability to work independently as well as cooperatively in a team environment ● Understanding of student centered approach and ability to collaborate with multiple constituencies ● A strong desire to support and assist international students
Preferred Qualifications:
● M.A. or equivalent in International Education/Higher Education preferred ● Excellent cross-cultural communication skills with substantial international experience ● Working knowledge of Banner and batch management preferred ● Knowledge of Sunapsis international case management software and/or expertise in Sunapsis software
