Meet with students who present at the center requesting crisis services
Determine appropriate level of care and follow-up services for students in crisis
Assess safety issues and do safety planning as needed with students who initiate services
Respond to phone calls and questions about CCSD services
Work closely with front office staff regarding screening, scheduling and phone consultation
Participate in after-hours emergency on-call rotation providing crisis assessment
Provide consultation to faculty, parents, and other ECU Staff members regarding students of concern and provide information related to CCSD services
Manage referrals into the community for students needing services other than those provided by CCSD
Serve as liaison with local hospital for discharge planning following inpatient treatment.
Provide supportive counseling as needed
Act as liaison between CCSD and Vidant Medical Center (obtain medical records as well as assist with student hospitalizations)
Link students with campus and community resources
Tracking: maintain tracking systems for clients identified by UBCT (University Behavioral Concerns Team) who are being seen at CCSD, clients who have been hospitalized, clients only seeking psychiatry services and clients of concern who are currently being seen at CCSD to prevent gaps in services
Work with the Dean of Students case manager for continuity of care for identified students
Maintain records of off campus referral sources.
Consult with CCSD psychiatry for coordination of care for students.
Provide consultation to CCSD staff members on medical withdrawal information and procedures
Coordinate documentation being sent to DOS for verification of students' attendance at CCSD for withdrawal applications.
Carry out administrative duties and other duties as assigned by the Director
Plan, conduct and evaluate outreach programs and services designed to facilitate student development and work cooperatively with university colleagues in developing and implementing quality programs
Participate in ongoing evaluative procedures of Center programs and services
Participate in ongoing professional development through in-service education programs conducted in the center, on campus, and/or professional organizations
Provide in-class instruction through outreach presentations and, when requested and possible, teach college adjustment courses
Other duties as assigned.
This is a 12 month position.
Minimum Education/Experience:
Master's degree in counseling, social work, or marriage and family therapy, or other appropriate human services field and eligibility for state licensure and/or certification in respective professional field

The Center for Counseling and Student Development is part of the Division of Student Affairs and is the primary counseling center for the ECU student community. The screening counselor's primary duty is to provide brief assessment and referral to in-house treatment options for students who present at CCSD requesting services. Case management includes providing supportive services to the CCSD staff re: students they see who may need to be referred off-campus or into their home communities.
The Center for Counseling and Student Development is staffed by generalists who work well as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Other duties include: crisis intervention; outreach and consultation; serving on university committees and participating in appropriate university activities; and participating in appropriate community, state and national activities, and taking an active role in the overall operation and function of the Center for Counseling and Student Development.
