Position Summary and Responsibilities Reporting to the Director of Health Services, the Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant assists the Student Health Service team in the performance of direct patient care services for our adolescent/young adult student population to include diagnostic and therapeutic services with physician supervision. Within the PA or NP Physician relationship, the mid- level practitioner exercises autonomy in medical decision making and services provided.
This professional midlevel clinical provider should have an advanced knowledge base and skills in health promotion and maintenance, disease prevention, physical and psychosocial assessment and management of health and illness applicable to the care of college students. Prior experience in urgent/emergency care is desirable since the PA/NP will manage Urgent/Emergent care and triage as well as alcohol and substance abuse education and STD prevention programs for the Health Service.
Similarly prior experience in psychiatric patient management is preferred. Supervisory skills would also be beneficial to this position as would proficiency in the use of an electronic health record system and e-prescribing.
Responsibilities:
Perform outpatient clinical care in collaboration with our medical staff.
Provide clinical oversight to our nursing staff.
Participate in on call and coordinate follow up of patients discharged from regional hospitals.
Order diagnostic testing and therapeutic modalities such as lab tests, x-rays, EKG's.
Prescribe and administer medications consistent within the PA/NP and supervising/collaborating Physician's scope of practice.
Conduct sports physicals and travel screening.
Provide health counseling and education to student patients including substance and alcohol abuse and sexual health issues.
Participation in various committees to advocate for the health of students.
Developing and implementing special programs to promote student health and wellness as requested.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Must be able to function with a high level of autonomy, be self-motivated and detail oriented and possess excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills.
Proficiency with computers is required and familiarity with electronic health records is desirable in addition to knowledge of New York State Regulations.
3 years of experience in either Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Adolescent Medicine or College Health or related field.
Education/Certification:
Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner Program required.
Current Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner licensure in the State of New York.
BLS certification recommended.
ACLS/PALS certification is preferred
