Job Description
Montgomery College, Takoma Park/ Silver Spring, and Germantown have an immediate need for a full-time Library Access Services Specialist I. Department Information.
The work schedule for Takoma Park/Silver Spring is Monday - Thursday, 10:30 am - 7:00 pm, Friday, 8:30 am - 5 pm, and alternating every third Saturday, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm (40 hours a week).
The work schedule for Germantown is Tuesday - Thursday, 1:30 pm - 10:00 pm, Friday - Saturday, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm (40 hours a week).
This is a bargaining, non-exempt, grade 17 position. Non-exempt positions are not eligible to work a secondary job at Montgomery College. Duties include but are not limited to:
Provides front-line support on the library service desk
Provides virtual and face-to-face support to users in finding materials and instructs library users on use of the library catalog, discovery service, and Databases
Triages information requests to the appropriate library and College units and engages in nuanced queries to answer information requests, using independent judgment and discretion. Understands when to refer complex issues to librarians or external units and services.
Delivers directional information to orient users to the physical space of the library and campus, as well as online assistance to users with the library website and online services available to them.
Assists with and troubleshoots technology issues in the library, including but not limited to issues with computers, laptops, tablets, assistive technology, print kiosks, digital scanners, Pharos account creation and assisting users with computer session management, the One Button Studio, Microsoft Office, MyMC, email systems, Blackboard, and WiFi connections. Contacts internal or external sources for maintenance as needed.
Responsible for tracking and maintaining data regarding circulation and information services transactions, including gate counts, using appropriate software.
Resolves issues with library accounts, both virtually and in-person in accordance with the Standards of Use of the MC Library.
Carries out regular opening and closing procedures for the library. Assumes responsibility for operations, facilities, and safety of the library during early morning, evening, and weekend hours.
Report facilities and public safety issues to the appropriate College office and informs the campus access services supervisor.
Interprets and implements College policies and procedures to ensure appropriate use of services, including maintaining user confidentiality in compliance with FERPA, maintaining appropriate use of resources in compliance with U.S. copyright law, and overseeing use of technology in the library in compliance with the College's Policy and Procedure 66001 Acceptable Use of Information Technology.
Checks in/out materials using the library management system, follows up on overdue materials and maintains accurate library user and item records.
Responsible for testing of the library management system upgrades, in collaboration with the lead library systems analyst.
Compiles statistics and analyzes data related to coordinating areas of responsibility in support of library goals and to support evidence-based decision-making by management.
Trains student employees on operational procedures in each functional area as needed.
Provides guidelines and instructions for each functional area to library employees and library users.
Reserves
Consult with faculty about course materials to be placed on reserve using the course reserves management system and the library management system. Identifies, locates, obtains, and processes requests for both print and electronic reserve items for faculty. As appropriate, retrieves/recalls items, scans and uploads articles or book chapters, requests items from other campus library locations and provides direct links to electronic resources.
Ensures that course reserves requests follow U.S. copyright law.
Maintains the textbook reserves program in support of Academic Affairs affordability initiatives.
Maintains the physical reserves collection, e-reserves, and related web pages, and manages the reserves module in the library management system.
Removes materials, including personal copies, from the reserves collection and returns items to the course instructor, as appropriate.
Troubleshoots course reserves problems reported by faculty, employees, and students.
Fines & Fees
Creates fine and fee notices (as well as courtesy, overdue item, cancellations, and pick-up notices), using the library management system.
Prints exception reports and corrects errors within the circulation module.
Uses appropriate tools in the College's enterprise financial system to post library fines and coordinates with the finance department to create accounts for community users who do not have an MC account.
Resolves problems and complaints related to overdue fines, lost items, and damaged items via phone, email, and in person.
Check the library management system's circulation module and the College's enterprise financial system to ensure outstanding fines are verified for all three campuses before the College's business office sends fines to the collection agency.
Contacts the cashier's office(s), as needed, to reconcile issues with accounts.
Inputs data and identifying information in library management system's serials module to support accurate and timely claiming of missing periodicals. Maintains back issues of periodicals in accordance with each title's retention schedule and manages the annual weeding project in collaboration with the
collection development librarian.
Stacks Maintenance
Ensures that items in the library collections are available and that items are properly located on shelves by understanding and applying the Library of Congress Call Number system.
Maintains labels on ends of shelving ranges to facilitate locating materials.
Oversees inventory and weeding projects in collaboration with the collection development librarian and campus access services supervisor. Reviews materials for damage and determines whether to repair or, in consultation with the collection development librarian, discard. Completes minor mending and repairs to library materials. Reprint call number labels as needed. Reports issues to the collection development librarians needed.
Displays and Events
Designs and creates displays (including complementary print and online resources, as appropriate) and assists with planning programming in support of Student Services and the Academic Area Liaison and Embedded Librarian Program.
Works with appropriate library and College offices to provide programming on specific, required themes.
Assists with outreach on behalf of the Access Services Division through planning, creation of materials, and staffing tables at appropriate events.
Technology
Serves as a supporting contact in access services for the OIT Service Desk.
Responsible for creating and following up on OIT Service Desk work orders for user-facing services.
Acts as the expert for the scanners, one-button studio, and collaborative workstations by training users and employees on their use and features.
Responsible for monitoring the use of public computers, printers, and scanners throughout the day to prevent service disruptions.
Serves as a supporting contact in troubleshooting for staff copiers and pay-for-print kiosks at their campus library location.
Provides technical support for disability support services at the library, assisting users with learning differences and/or users with unique visual, and auditory.
Serves on library and College committees, as appropriate. Reports out important information to library stakeholders.
Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills in communication with students, colleagues, and employees as an individual or on a team.
Stays current with customer service training.
Stays current with relevant skills through professional development, such as through involvement in professional organizations, regional library
organizations, and attending professional meetings, conferences, or workshops.
Prepares and shares information learned from library professional development activities (conferences, trainings, webinars, etc.) with colleagues.
Required Qualifications:
Associates Degree
One year of experience working in a library, or two years of administrative support or customer service experience.
The equivalent combination of education, training, certification and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and expertise to perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.

Hiring Range $20.04 to $25.05 per hour. Initial salary placement is based on candidate experience and internal equity. Please include a complete resume including all relevant and related work experience.
