Student Health and Well-Being (SHWB) Mental Health Services at Johns Hopkins University seeks an energetic, organized, and motivated Referral and Insurance Coordinator to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment focused on supporting the well-being of a diverse community of learners. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Case Management, the Referral and Insurance Coordinator is a member of the team focused on providing support for community referrals, assisting students with insurance claims, and care coordination within the SHWB suite of services.
The Referral and Insurance Coordinator will assist students and learners with transitioning to community providers for longer-term or specialized care; work collaboratively with primary care, psychiatry, and clinical staff to ensure continuity of treatment; establish and maintain a robust community referral database and provide education around student insurance and benefits. The successful candidate demonstrates a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in clinical work and all professional activities.
Essential Job Functions
Referral Coordinator Duties (90%)
Assists students and learners with connections to community providers, including therapists, psychiatrists/prescribers and ancillary resources.
Investigates insurance information relevant to the referral process on behalf of clients and provides psychoeducation on insurance benefits.
Follows up with students and learners to ensure continuity of care; reviews feedback from students and learners about their experiences with community providers.
Coordinates follow-up for Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) referrals from Primary Care.
Represent Mental Health Services on the University Insurance Committee.
Processes insurance referral paperwork, deductible waivers, and related documentation for the student health insurance plan.
Collaborates with providers with SHWB as part of an interdisciplinary treatment team.
Coordinate provider transfers within the treatment team.
Complete all required paperwork and documentation in EHR in a timely and accurate manner.
Collaborative and Consultative Activities (5%)
Provides consultation to students, faculty, and staff related to care coordination for community referrals.
Participates in MHS team meetings, recruitment, and hiring processes.
Provides training as appropriate to new and current staff regarding referrals, insurance, and policy issues.
Work with the Associate Director of Clinical Services to initiate follow-up procedures with students who have lapsed in treatment.
Outreach Duties (5%)
Participates in outreach and educational activities, including resource fairs, community meetings, and training for JHU faculty, staff, and students.
Special Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities
Demonstrated commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
Demonstrated commitment to the principles of anti-oppression, inclusive excellence, and diversity through involvement and participation in university and division-wide projects and initiatives.
Knowledge of insurance policies, deductibles, co-insurance, and superbills.
Experience in coordination with clients and medical insurance providers for updates, payments, and benefits.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in counseling, social work, or a related field required.
Three years experience working in education, counseling, social work, or insurance-related environment required.
Experience in navigating complex, decentralized environments.
Preferred Qualifications
Five or more years of experience preferred.
Prior experience providing referrals for mental health services.
Experience in a university setting is strongly preferred.
Experience working with international students strongly preferred.

Additional Information (Working Conditions):
Schedule: 37.5 hours per week (not including lunch breaks). Clinics are open Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5p.m. This position is eligible for some remote work, schedule to be determined by clinic needs and supervisor approval.
This position is designated as a Required Attendance Employee, designated as vital to the operation of a work group, so may be required to work during a university closure in response to operational needs.
