The Office for African, Black, Caribbean Student Success (ABC SS) was created to advocate for the holistic success of ABC students on campus. At its core, the Office for ABC Student Success is intended to secure campus-wide strategic initiatives and priorities by addressing equity gaps, climate issues, persistent under enrollment, and retention and graduation rates of ABC students. With a focus on institutional transformation and measurable impact, the staff in the office will actively work to remove barriers from the student experience.
About the Division
The UC Santa Cruz Division of Student Affairs and Success (DSAS), led by the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Success, consists of nearly 250 team members spanning 3 major units and 21 departments. The division provides campus-wide coordination and leadership for student success programs, activities, and initiatives. DSAS also does our work through a range of resource centers dedicated to providing direct student support. The division's work is grounded in educational equity, institutional responsibility, and an unfettered commitment to supporting the whole student. DSAS aspires to ensure every student feels welcome, supported, and a sense of belonging during their time on campus. The division's efforts are informed by robust and dynamic relationships with campus leadership, faculty, students, and staff from across the campus, reflecting the broad campus commitment to ensuring student success. About Student Success and Equity (SSE)
The Student Success and Equity (SSE) portfolio of departments is a branch of DSAS focused on academic support services, advising/counseling, student life/co-curricular programming, student identity development and retention/student success initiatives. Student Success and Equity provides services to the campus community with over 17,000 undergraduate and graduate students and has over 64 career employees and 475 student staff employees operating in 8 facilities/locations. The Student Success and Equity
area includes a wide array of multi-disciplinary academic and non-academic units including: Disability Resource Center (DRC), Educational Opportunity Programs (EOP), Learning Support Services, Services for Transfer and Re-entry Students (STARS), Renaissance Scholars Program (including Foster Youth), Veteran Resource Center, African American Resource and Cultural Center (AARCC), American Indian Resource Center (AIRC), Asian American/Pacific Islander Resource Center (AA/PIRC), Chicano/Latino Resource Center (El Centro), Women's Center (WC), the Lionel Cantu Queer Center (LGBTQ+), Undocumented Student Services (USS), the UCSC Hispanic Serving Institution Initiatives (HSI), African Black and Caribbean Student Success, Career Success, and campus committees/programs, and the Administrative and Business team for the unit.
The Student Success and Equity area includes all of the units and over 125 state, federal, student service fees and gift fund sources and an annual operating budget of nearly $18 million dollars.
JOB SUMMARY
Under the general supervision of the Executive Director of African, Black, Caribbean Student Success (ABC SS) and working very closely with the Director of Educational Opportunity Programs (EOP), the ABC Retention Specialist provides direct services to African/Black/Caribbean students, coordinates strategic initiatives to support the academic success, retention and graduation of African Black, Caribbean students to help close equity gaps address campus climate. The incumbent provides academic and personal counseling/guidance and manages student cases to propel their holistic development and success as university students. The ABC Retention Specialist is based out of the Office for African, Black, Caribbean Student Success under Student Success and Equity (SSE). In addition, the ABC Retention Specialist collaborates with campus partners including the Colleges, Academic Departments, faculty, student service units and student organizations on retention/student success initiatives. The incumbent is readily accessible to faculty, staff, students and parents/family members and coordinates communication and student case management. The ABC Retention Specialist conducts project management including data collection, evaluation and reporting. The incumbent supervises and trains student staff and engages in professional development to implement best practices and research-based methodologies.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Budgeted Salary:$68,000 - $71,500 / Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience. Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. 50% - Student Case Management and Academic/Personal Counseling
Provides academic performance and progress advocacy and student crisis support; provides resource information and referrals to campus support programs.
Provides drop-in advising and guides students to develop academic and co-curricular pathways.
Meets with students individually and in small groups, and monitors academic performance to provide support in the areas of academic planning, course selection, as well as, adjusting to the university, campus life and academic setting. Provides guidance/intervention to problem solve and support student success.
Assesses and diagnoses underlying and root issues/challenges that interfere with student success.
Develops, facilitates, and monitors student action plans to increase academic and social success.
Prioritizes student cases to ensure timely intervention is applied before a student discontinues their studies at UCSC.
Communicates with the Division of Student Affairs and Success, Educational Opportunity Programs (EOP), Student Success and Equity, Dean of Students Office, College &
Department Advisers and other colleagues on campus to track and resolve student issues.
Engages with colleagues in departments such as faculty, academic staff, the Colleges, Financial Aid, Housing, Student Business Services, Counseling and Psychological Services and others to advocate on behalf of students and seek resolutions to a myriad of issues impacting the retention and graduation pathway of students.
Refers students to academic and student support services. Follows up and tracks utilization to ensure interventions are being applied. Communicates regularly with students including students who are on leave or have taken time off and ensure they have an action plan to return and complete their studies.
30% - Program Development and Project Management
Plans events and projects aimed to support and retain African, Black, and Caribbean (ABC) students at UCSC, students who are first in their families to attend college, come from historically low-income backgrounds and under resourced schools and communities.
Prepares and presents educational workshops and trainings for students, staff, and faculty, on topics related to ABC student experience that build upon the strengths of ABC students with learning outcomes related to academic and student success.
Works collaboratively with appropriate campus units to develop and implement programs on a variety of topics, including but not limited to study skills, career development, academic success and student leadership seminars and workshops.
Prepares and manages program/project budgets, completes fiscal transactions and forms, prepares Purchase Orders, and other operational tasks as needed, in accordance to university policies.
Develops and institutes program evaluation models and data collection in a timely manner for unit operational reporting purposes, and for campus and external funding sources.
Prepares and produces public service announcements for media outlets, and develops marketing strategies using a variety of methods including social networking, email campaigns, website development, and publicizing large events to the campus and communities.
Develops and monitors project budget plans and track actual expenses to spending projections.
Supervises, mentors, and evaluates performance for student interns and volunteers, related to their program or projects, particularly those focused on ABC student programs and services.
Develops, institutes, and maintains leadership development for student staff including but not limited to the Resource Centers' collaborative Student Leadership Institute that develops student leadership training and skills.
Prepares monthly, quarterly and annual reports documenting patterns and trends in student cases and emerging best practices/solutions in serving students.
Regularly tracks, reports and briefs the team members and campus colleagues on the status of student cases.
Researches, monitors and tracks policy issues and practices related to student success, retention and graduation.
May teach courses that promote the academic success of ABC students.
15% - Outreach and Advocacy
Participates in and leads campus committees, workgroups, and task forces related to campus climate.
Acts as a liaison to student groups and campus departments, to advance ABC student retention at UCSC.
Represents the department affiliations at various campus functions such as student organization meetings, resource fairs, and other orientation and outreach programs.
Serves as a trainer and content expert on issues related to first generation to college, low income, African, Black, Caribbean in higher education. Educates the campus community on effective counseling practices for ABC in higher education.
Develops, delivers and evaluates training programs to build the capacity of student staff and colleagues that provide direct services to students.
Participates in the development of annual goals and calendar of AARCC, EOP, Student Success and Equity, and the Division of Student Affairs and Success.
5% - Other duties as assigned
Attends all regularly scheduled professional staff meetings, including but not limited to, unit team meetings, meetings with the Executive Director, Campus Stakeholder meetings, and strategic project and initiatives working groups.
Participates on department and/or campus-wide committees and activities as assigned, including but not limited to. Behavioral Intervention Team, Hate/Bias Response Team, Academic Standing Review, etc.
Regularly participates in ongoing professional development opportunities including workshops, conferences, and webinars. Reviews relevant literature to remain current on emerging trends and issues in higher education.
Provides support to the Executive Director for special projects, and performs other duties as assigned based on student population, department, and University needs.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Knowledge and understanding of African, Black, Caribbean student experience in higher education, as well as knowledge of broader diversity in higher education and the ability to address these issues through co-curricular programs and activities.
Excellent cultural competency skills to engage with individuals from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.
Knowledge in how to enhance students' intellectual and personal growth and development, including critical thinking, effective communication, self-appraisal, self-esteem, clarification of values, appropriate career choices, and leadership.
Demonstrated experience working with communities who have been traditionally underserved by higher education and experience in the pedagogy reflecting intersections of race, culture, class, ethnic, and queer communities, including African, Black, Caribbean communities.
Knowledge and experience in analyzing complex situations and identifying solutions for problem-solving; skills and experience in developing and administering programs designed to meet the diverse needs of students.
Ability to produce detailed reports and documents; ability to analyze data, present findings, and suggest resolutions.
Demonstrated experience with college students in program leadership and professional development.
Demonstrated experience in the following areas: recruitment, retention, or academic advising at the university level.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree in education, counseling, gender/queer/ethnic studies or related field.
Knowledge and understanding of Muslim student experience in higher education, as well as knowledge of broader issues of Islamophobia and the ability to address these issues through co-curricular programs and activities.
Demonstrated experience in managing student cases in higher education and the ability to manage multiple caseloads.
Demonstrated skills in web marketing, design, and social media interactions.
