The mission of the First Year Center is to reach out to all incoming students to develop a best fit choice major, create a graduation plan, and identify and assist students facing challenges along the way.
Each academic adviser in the First Year Advising Center will manage a caseload of students and will assist them in all facets of academic planning and transition to college life.
Each adviser in the First Year Advising Center will serve as a liaison to a professional school or the College of Arts and Sciences to insure effective communication in the interest of student progress and engagement.
Each adviser will have a role in retention initiatives at the departmental and university-wide level.
Minimum Qualifications:
Master's Degree in Education (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
Minimum of two years of experience in an educational setting.
Demonstrated skill in working with students to achieve educational goals.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with students.
Ability to work collaboratively with academic colleagues in development of academic advising protocol and programs to retain students in their first year of college and move them into their major course of study.
Possess strong technical and database skills.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to communicate effectively with others.
Preferred Qualifications:
Minimum of two years advising or counseling experience in an educational setting including use and interpretation of career exploration tools.
