The University of Michigan?s Science Learning Center (SLC) seeks a highly motivated and experienced professional for our Study Group Program Manager position. The Study Group Program Manager coordinates all aspects of the SLC Study Group Program, including both the day-to-day operations and program development components, and the recruitment, training, and supervision of one graduate student program assistant, and shared supervisory responsibility of approximately 250 undergraduate study group facilitators with the SLC Assistant Director.
The Study Group Program Manager reports directly to the SLC Assistant Director. The Study Group Program Manager is part of the Academic Programs Team and works collaboratively with a strong emphasis on communication and teamwork to ensure the SLC?s academic programs are integrated and coordinated. The SLC Study Group Program engages undergraduates enrolled in introductory science courses through weekly, two-hour sessions, allowing members to teach and learn from their peers with the guidance of a trained facilitator. The Study Group Program Manager handles various challenging tasks, including recruitment, training, and supervision of facilitators, program assessment, and engagement with faculty and staff from multiple LSA units. Additionally, the role involves navigating complex issues such as maintaining welcoming and inclusive learning spaces, training large student groups on diverse topics, and evaluating and elevating employment performance. In addition to these responsibilities, the Study Group Program Manager will also be involved in the planning and execution of some larger SLC initiatives, including our efforts to recruit and retain underrepresented students in the STEM fields.
This position does require some evening and weekend work for start-of-term training, support during busy periods prior to exams, workshops, collaborations, and special events.
This position may be eligible for remote and/or flexible work opportunities at the discretion of the hiring department. Flexible work agreements are reviewed annually and are subject to change dependent on the business needs of the hiring department, throughout the course of employment.
35% Program Supervision - Responsible for the direct supervision of 150-200 study group facilitators, with the remaining 50-100 study group facilitators in the program being supervised by the SLC Assistant Director. Coordinate observations and conduct evaluations of study group facilitators. Meet with facilitators as necessary to provide feedback, including recommendations for professional development, and suggested or required training. Address any concerns from program administration, study group members, faculty or other stakeholders around job performance. Investigate complaints regarding academic dishonesty, gender or racial bias, or other serious issues and determine appropriate outcome, including possible mediation, mandatory training, and termination when appropriate.
20% Program Assessment ? Develop and administer evaluation instruments, including forms, rubrics, and surveys, assess program efficacy and obtain evaluation feedback on study group facilitators. Review compiled data, write reports, and present analysis of mid-term and end-of-term evaluations of study group members and facilitators, making recommendations regarding needed training topics, supervisory issues, trends, etc. Assess facilitator training sessions and implement changes based on feedback.
15% Facilitator Training ? Develop and facilitate monthly active-learning based training sessions for 230 study group facilitators on complex facilitation skills, collaborative learning techniques, research-based learning strategies, and DEI-related topics such as microaggressions, unconscious bias, stereotype threat, etc. The Study Group Program Manager will also develop and provide targeted training based on facilitator and program evaluations, including study group observations, evaluation debriefings, and recommendations from the SLC Director, Associate Director and Assistant Director, and provide additional training for the program?s 25 undergraduate course leaders.
10% Faculty Engagement ? Meet with course instructors to present data on academic support for their students, review curriculum and build connections between study group and course content, conduct class visits to present on programs and services, and collaborate regarding academic support referrals.
10% Study Group Recruitment ? Select top-level candidates from 400-500 applicants per year for interviews. Develop and refine interview rubrics. Coordinate and conduct group and individual interviews. Provide 100-150 hiring recommendations based on applications and interview scores. Conduct outreach to college programs and student groups with diverse student populations.
10% Special Projects - Participate in special projects as requested by department leadership, including but not limited to exploring and implementing new software, participating in and/or planning special events, participating in outreach efforts, or working on interdepartmental projects that align with the SLC's mission and goals.
Bachelor's degree
Three to five years of higher education experience with supervisory responsibilities over student and/or professional staff
Exceptional interpersonal skills, including positive relationships with students, faculty, and staff, and a proven ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
Outstanding organizational, problem-solving, motivational, and communication skills, with the ability to be self-driven, setting own deadlines and prioritizing multiple tasks
Ability to maintain integrity of confidential materials and student information
Experience in an academic support role and/or university learning center
Knowledge of student learning theory and the ability to apply best practices programmatically
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion with experience working with diverse student populations and adapting to diverse learning needs.
Possession of at least one degree (undergraduate or graduate) in a STEM field, related degree, or experience.
Master's degree in higher education, student services, science education, counseling or equivalent
