Job Description:
Position Goals
The Assistant Dean of Academic Advisement and Retention plans and manages activities related to academic advisement, student retention and completion strategies on all campuses. They analyze the competitive landscape of higher education by developing innovative advisement strategies and optimizing the use of technology. The Assistant Dean of Advisement and Retention provides effective leadership by supervising, leading, and inspiring a team that collaboratively work together to support all aspects of student affairs, academic advising, and retention. They demonstrate and promote a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion.
Essential Functions
Provide leadership and direction for undergraduate advising programs and services, working closely with academic departments, faculty, and other stakeholders to develop and implement policies and procedures that support students.
Provide direct leadership, supervision, and evaluation of all academic advisement staff, including state and federal student support grants (ex: Educational Opportunity Fund/Student Support Services).
Develop and implement strategic initiatives and programs to enhance undergraduate advising at the college.
Monitor key performance indicators and make programmatic changes to ensure advising service effectiveness.
Coordinate with the Academic Affairs Division to ensure full integration of curriculum changes and program updates.
Recruit, hire, and onboard advisement staff including full-time, part-time, and student employees.
Develop and oversee training and professional development for advisement staff and campus stakeholders.
Manage and oversee software including Self Service/Student Planning, AdvisorTrac and Aviso Early Alert System.
Represent the advisement center on appropriate college committees.
Direct and lead staff in the development and implementation of college wide retention strategies, including Early Alert software.
Design, implement and oversee success and retention strategies for student cohorts such as an early alert system.
Work with the Office of Institutional Research to analyze data to inform the successful progress of undergraduates, including analysis of student retention and persistence.
Collaborate with all campus stakeholders to support advisement. Oversee advisement information sessions for students.
Participate in campus-wide events such as Commencement, New Student Orientation, and Open Houses.
Collaborate with transfer and career advisors.
Manage assigned budgets.
Work directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic and socio economic backgrounds.
Comply with all safety, fire, and smoking regulations.
Complete all mandatory compliance and safety training as scheduled by Human Resources.
Perform all other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree required.
Seven years of experience in advisement or higher education required.
Demonstrated progressive supervision required.
Outstanding interpersonal, leadership, supervisory and training skills.
Experience in budget management.
Knowledge of Guided Pathways to Student Success programming preferred.
Ability to work as a part of a cross-functional team in an innovative, fast-paced environment.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Demonstrated record of leading a customer-oriented staff.
Strong technical skills and familiarity with Ellucian Colleague/Student Planning, Microsoft Office, and retention software.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.
