DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The future and ongoing development of the Underground Scholars Program at UC Santa Cruz was created by current and alumni students who were formerly incarcerated or justice involved. The direction of the program was derived from student leaders who expressed needs for visibility and a program specifically geared toward assisting formerly incarcerated and system-impacted students to thrive at UC Santa Cruz. The Underground Scholars Program is situated within the Renaissance Scholars Program and Services for Transfer and Re-entry Students (STARS) in the Division of Student Success.
About Services for Transfer and Re-entry Students (STARS):
The mission of Services for Transfer and Re-entry Students (STARS) is to advance social mobility for transfer, re-entry and independent students by providing transformative higher education experiences. STARS maintains an expertise on guiding students who disproportionately enter higher education through community colleges, and actively removes systemic barriers that impede their success. STARS offers culturally relevant counseling and mentorship programs, as well as equity-centered programs that create access, cultivate belonging, motivate persistence, nurture wellness and establish the conditions where our students can thrive in and beyond college. The communities include students who have experiences with the following: community college, returning to school at an older age, military, being parents, foster care, homelessness, incarceration, or independent status.
About Student Success and Equity (SSE):
The Student Success and Equity (SSE) portfolio of departments is a branch of DSAS focused on academic support services, advising/counseling, student life/co-curricular programming, student identity development and retention/student success initiatives. Student Success and Equity provides services to the campus community with over 17,000 undergraduate and graduate students and has over 64 career employees and 475 student staff employees operating in 8 facilities/locations. The Student Success and Equity area includes a wide array of multi-disciplinary academic and non-academic units including: Disability Resource Center (DRC), Educational Opportunity Programs (EOP), Learning Support Services, Services for Transfer and Re-entry Students (STARS), Renaissance Scholars Program (including Foster Youth), Veteran Resource Center, African American Resource and Cultural Center (AARCC), American Indian Resource Center (AIRC), Asian American/Pacific Islander Resource Center (AA/PIRC), Chicano/Latino Resource Center (El Centro), Women's Center (WC), the Lionel Cantu Queer Center (LGBTQ+), Undocumented Student Services (USS), the UCSC Hispanic Serving Institution Initiatives (HSI), African Black and Caribbean Student Success, Career Success, and campus committees/programs, and the Administrative and Business team for the unit. About Division of Student Affairs and Success (DSAS):
The UC Santa Cruz Division of Student Affairs and Success (DSAS), led by the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Success, consists of nearly 250 team members spanning 3 major units and 21 departments. The division provides campus-wide coordination and leadership for student success programs, activities, and initiatives. DSAS also does their work through a range of resource centers dedicated to providing direct student support. Work is grounded in educational equity, institutional responsibility, and an unfettered commitment to supporting the whole student. DSAS aspires to ensure every student feels welcome, supported, and a sense of belonging during their time on campus. Efforts are informed by robust and dynamic relationships with campus leadership, faculty, students, and staff from across the campus, reflecting the broad campus commitment to ensuring student success. Beyond UC Santa Cruz, our team is involved in numerous professional organizations and highly engaged in the local community.
Under the supervision of the Underground Scholars Program Coordinator, the Underground Scholars Outreach Specialist provides direct services to formerly incarcerated and system-impacted students and coordinates programs to support their academic success and transfer process to UC Santa Cruz. In addition, the Outreach Specialist collaborates with local community college partners such as academic departments, faculty, student service units and student organizations on retention/student success initiatives and pathways. The incumbent will supervise and train student staff, and engage in professional development to implement best practices and research based methodologies.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Budgeted Salary: $27.15 - $32.04 / Hourly. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience. Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.
70% - Program Coordination and Outreach Initiatives
Oversee and develop a transfer preparation program for community college students who are formerly incarcerated.
Contribute to the ongoing development of effective programs & workshops designed to support students transfer process to UCSC, with a specialization in supporting students who are justice impacted or formerly incarcerated.
Develop and implement programs and workshops that build upon the strengths of current and prospective Underground Scholar students with learning outcomes related to academic and student success.
Collaborate and co-facilitate with campus units and community college partners to increase the utilization and inclusion of Underground Scholar students or formerly incarcerated/justice involved students.
In collaboration with appropriate campus colleagues and Underground Scholar student leaders, develop and participate in outreach programs to various community college groups.
Refer community college / prospective students with other Underground Scholars students, staff and specialized campus resources.
Participate in general outreach activities and coordinate orientation programs and workshops for current and prospective Underground Scholar students, such as, UCSC OPERS Fest, STARS Fall Welcome events, and any other major campus and off campus events.
20% - Student Leadership & Development
Maintain working knowledge of student leadership theories and practice.
Develop and organize effective peer advising programs designed to support the transition and retention of formerly incarcerated and system impacted students.
Train and support student leaders.
Co-facilitate workshops with student leaders, and collaborate with other STARS staff.
Develop and implement academic support services, including tutoring, study skills, career development, academic success and leadership seminars and workshops.
Engage student leaders in workshop design, project management and implementation.
10% - Administration
Create, analyze, and evaluate program information and provide data for review in developing and implementing strategies for meeting programmatic goals and enhancing processes.
Follow-up and track utilization to ensure interventions are being applied.
Contribute to the development of an annual spending plan.
Prepare and process purchasing and financial forms for programming including purchase orders, ERFs, reimbursements, recharges and credit cards.
Write an annual year-end report.
Participate in the development of annual goals and calendar of the STARS office.
Contribute updates to the unit's business continuity plan on an annual basis.
Attend meetings, conferences and serve on committees that address the needs of formerly incarcerated and system-impacted students.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Demonstrated ability to coordinate services and lead programs for students in a higher education context, in particular with community college settings.
Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance student achievement, such as peer mentoring, coaching, career development and advocacy.
Knowledge of trends and issues facing community college transfer students, in particular, formerly incarcerated or justice involved / impacted students.
Multicultural humility; knowledge and experience working and interacting effectively with diverse groups of staff, faculty, and formerly incarcerated / justice involved student populations.
Supervisory skills to hire, train, and provide coaching and guidance to student staff.
Ability to complete work accurately and on time, with frequent interruptions and/or distractions.

Knowledge of University, college, and major requirements, policies and procedures, including policies on handling student records and confidential documents.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
The selected candidate will be required to work primarily on campus, with periods of remote work possible based on operational needs, and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
