The Disability Resource Center (DRC) is responsible for coordinating academic accommodations and support services to university graduate and undergraduate students with varying types of disabilities. The DRC advises, advocates, educates and trains students and other members of the campus community regarding equal access and disability-related issues.
About the Division
The UC Santa Cruz Division of Student Affairs and Success (DSAS), led by the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Success, consists of nearly 250 team members spanning 3 major units and 21 departments. The division provides campus-wide coordination and leadership for student success programs, activities, and initiatives. DSAS also does our work through a range of resource centers dedicated to providing direct student support. About Student Success and Equity (SSE)
The Student Success and Equity (SSE) portfolio of departments is a branch of DSAS focused on academic support services, advising/counseling, student life/co-curricular programming, student identity development and retention/student success initiatives. Student Success and Equity provides services to the campus community with over 17,000 undergraduate and graduate students and has over 64 career employees and 475 student staff employees operating in 8 facilities/locations. The Student Success and Equity area includes a wide array of multi-disciplinary academic and non-academic units including: Disability Resource Center (DRC), Educational Opportunity Programs (EOP), Learning Support Services, Services for Transfer and Re-entry Students (STARS), Renaissance Scholars Program (including Foster Youth), Veteran Resource Center, African American Resource and Cultural Center (AARCC), American Indian Resource Center (AIRC), Asian American/Pacific Islander Resource Center (AA/PIRC), Chicano/Latino Resource Center (El Centro), Women's Center (WC), the Lionel Cantu Queer Center (LGBTQ+), Undocumented Student Services (USS), the UCSC Hispanic Serving Institution Initiatives (HSI), African Black and Caribbean Student Success, Career Success, and campus committees/programs, and the Administrative and Business team for the unit.
The Student Success and Equity area includes all of the units and over 125 state, federal, student service fees and gift fund sources and an annual operating budget of nearly $18 million dollars.
Under the supervision of the DRC Office Manager, the Assistant Service Coordinator coordinates Disability Resource Center (DRC) intakes and temporary accommodations for students with varying types of disabilities, oversees the DRC email and virtual reception, responds to and manages response to urgent inquiries from students, parents, faculty, and other community members, processes documentation, maintains the assistive technology lab, provides support for the DRC data system, supervises student assistants at DRC reception, and conducts general office support.
The Assistant Service Coordinator is responsible for developing and directing programs, services, and activities to facilitate equal access and promote student success/retention/graduation and leadership development at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The incumbent applies professional knowledge to a narrow range of student disability issues, such as access, proctoring, or note-taking. The Assistant Service Coordinator performs independently within this narrow range, and receives guidance from the DRC Director for more complex issues.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Budgeted Salary:$31.13 - $33.52 / Hourly. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience. Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.
Conducts interviews with students with temporary disabilities who report barriers impacting equal access to academics, campus resources, and/or programs; determines appropriate level of support or referrals; makes recommendations/authorizations for services and ADA accommodations.
Coordinates accommodation requests with appropriate internal and external service units.
Coordinates arrangements with Disability Van Services and Parking for students with mobility and other disabilities.
Conducts appropriate and accurate information entry and case notes for service(s) provided.
Conducts informational interviews for students and families/allies seeking information about DRC processes.
Assists with communication to affiliated students about accessing DRC services.
Administers and maintains the computer lab for DRC students; collaborates with DRC Accessible Media Coordinator to ensure accessible technology is updated.
Processes students' medical documentation received by fax, mail, and email.
Develops training materials for students and campus partners on DRC processes for accommodations.
30% - Coordination of DRC Reception and Information Management
Oversees the reception of DRC students and visitors and the dissemination of information at the front desk to ensure a welcoming and accessible environment for visitors on arrival in both the physical office and virtual spaces.
Hires, trains, and supervises student assistants who work as a part of the reception and accommodation administration team at the front desk, in the DRC email, and in the virtual reception area.
Oversees dissemination of information; ensures all team members are provided with updated and accurate information.
Assists with the maintenance of the department's online information management system, Accommodate.
Maintains department team calendars and updates website content for respective areas of oversight.
15% - General Office Operations Support
Inventories and distributes DRC equipment.
Orders and maintains DRC supplies.
Manages facility, which includes access management (i.e. key, key card), phone and network requests, and facilities and moving requests for DRC offices.
5% - Continuing Education
Keeps abreast of all new changes and developments in the field of higher education as applicable to job functions.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Knowledge of the legal framework involving accommodations for disabilities through state and federal laws and regulations in relation to the narrow focus of assigned responsibilities.
Skill in communicating with students, faculty, staff, and vendors concerning access accommodations.
Demonstrated experience working in education or a social service-oriented office environment.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, demanding, high volume and compliance-oriented environment, and work independently and respond to requests in a timely manner.
Thorough knowledge of computer applications, office systems and administrative procedures, and ability to operate office equipment.
Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion in handling confidential materials and matters, and determine when to escalate matters to appropriate resources. Ability to apply good judgment in resource management.
