Job Description:

Part-time Peer Tutor- current needs are as follows:

Spanish, Composition, General Writing, Humanities, Respiratory Care, Physical Therapy Assistant, Natural Sciences, First Year Experience, and Computer Science. Other subjects may also be needed.

Some tutors will be embedded in assigned course sections.

Campus Location: Remote and Danvers or Lynn (Hybrid)

Work Schedule: Varies; 6-12 hours per week.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

The mission of North Shore Community College's Tutoring Centers is to support the learning efforts of the students, faculty teaching, and the larger goals within each program of study.

Tutoring is an academic support strategy which seeks to increase the probability of academic success. Peer tutors will conduct individual and, on occasion, small-group tutoring sessions in specified subject areas. Tutors also participate in required training sessions.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Meet with students individually or in a small group as appropriate;
2. Provide tutorial assistance in specified subject area(s), including study and academic success skills;
3. Offer referrals to tutoring, Academic Advising, Financial Services, Accessibility Services, and other support services;
4. Create Navigate system records of student attendance and learning progress;
5. If an embedded tutor, sit in on assigned class and communicate with faculty member;
6. Escalate any concerns about a tutoring student to supervisor;
7. Attend required tutor training sessions and staff meetings throughout the semester;
8. Assist students in making appointments and logging in/out of center;
9. Visit classes to promote tutoring services;
10. Tutor students in area(s) of expertise;
11. Perform other duties as necessary and as requested by the supervisor.

Requirements:

• Recent B+ or higher grade from North Shore Community College in assigned tutoring courses.
• Endorsement of a faculty member for each subject tutored.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to work remotely if needed with access to reliable internet for regular video conference activities.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Cooperates and works well with both peers and supervisors.
• Demonstrate qualities of patience and empathy; respect for students of all genders, gender identities, cultural/ethnic backgrounds, ages, and abilities.
• Successful experience interacting with culturally diverse populations.
• Candidates will be required to pass a CORI/SORI and/or a National background check as a condition of employment.

Additional Information:

SALARY: $16.00 per hour. This is a non-benefited position, 6-12 hours per week.
