University Advancement (UA) supports the entire CMU community in building relationships with key constituencies and securing the financial resources the university needs to continue its ascent. As the division grows, we are seeking an associate director, Alumni and Constituent Engagement. This is an exciting opportunity if you thrive in an interesting and challenging work environment. Reporting to the director of networks, you will develop initiatives to promote and foster high quality, life-long relationships between the University and its alumni. You will also coordinate and manage alumni volunteers, programs, events and services, with specific attention to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and other alumni engagement strategic initiatives. Additionally, you will support alumni engagement and Advancement strategies by serving as an engagement manager for a portfolio of current or future engaged alumni.
Your core responsibilities will include:
- Managing, implementing and directing all aspects of alumni engagement within the assigned program area.
- Establishing and maintaining strong collaborative partnerships with alumni, volunteers, students, parents, faculty, and colleagues in Alumni & Constituent Engagement, Advancement, schools and colleges, and other university offices in furtherance of Alumni and Constituent Engagement and programmatic goals.
- Managing identity-based alumni networks, in partnership with volunteer leadership and in collaboration with the director of Alumni and Constituent Engagement..
- Assessing results of programs, communications, etc. in order to improve impact.
- Implementing new initiatives and programs designed to enhance the alumni engagement activities of assigned program area.
- Overseeing and managing marketing and communications efforts related to alumni engagement program; may include writing for print and on-line publications.
- Serving on various boards and direct committees as requested.
- Collaborating with and serving as the liaison to departments across the university on related programs and initiatives.
- Coordinating and managing alumni volunteers, programs, events and services.
- Participating in presentations to university and alumni groups.
- Potentially managing an engagement portfolio of volunteers and engaged alumni.
- Potentially identifying, recruiting and managing alumni volunteers to serve on boards and committees.
- Other duties as assigned.

You should be able to travel domestically and be willing to work outside of normal business hours as needed. Evening and weekend work will occasionally be required; teleconferencing is required with varied times due to time zone differences. You should be able to work in a variety of environments related to indoor and outdoor university events.
Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree is required; master's degree preferred with a broad knowledge of university advancement functions.
- Five to seven years of experience within alumni relations/development or related field; seven or more years preferred of progressive experience in events planning, volunteer management, or student affairs. Budgetary oversight experience preferred.
- Education and training in anti-oppression work and an interest in continuous learning from both a U.S and international perspective.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of history of systemic inequity, racism, ableism, immigrant/migration experience and neurodivergence (understanding of intersectionality) in the context of alumni engagement and the alumni experience. Demonstrated experience as a culturally sensitive communicator, programmer and colleague.
- Strong volunteer management and event planning skills.
- Proficiency with a variety of computer applications and familiarity with advancement databases and web-based tools.
Requirements
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and successfully complete a driver's license verification on an annual basis. Must complete the National Safety Council Defensive Driver Training once every three years
