Coordinator of Programs II (Band F)
CALS Office of Academic Programs
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
Ithaca, NY
Who We Are:
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty, and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented and/or marginalized identities to apply.
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at Cornell University is engaged in pioneering pursuit of inclusive, purpose-driven science. As Cornell University's second largest college, with discovery for impact at its core, we work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through equitable, world-renowned research, education, and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: natural and human systems; food, energy, and environmental resources; and social, physical, and economic well-being.
What you will do:
While position responsibilities vary, every member of our community is expected to foster a culture of belonging and a psychologically healthy work environment by communicating across differences; being cooperative, collaborative, open, and welcoming; showing respect, compassion, and empathy; engaging and supporting others regardless of background or perspective; speaking up when others are being excluded or treated inappropriately; and supporting work/life integration of oneself and others.
Duties will include collaborating with colleagues across CALS Office of Academic Programs to establish new and innovative approaches to helping students strengthen the experiences that lead to well-rounded students and fulfilling careers post college. CALS has a goal of streamlining, elevating the importance, and making more accessible these activities most important to students while complementing their solid academic experience at Cornell.
The value of a CALS education is greatly enhanced by connected experience within and outside of the classroom.
Experiential learning opportunities such as community engagement, internships, international studies, research, and entrepreneurial ambitions are what undergraduate resumes are made of. However, barriers to accessing these opportunities currently exist and finding a way in can be confusing. We know that navigating such experiences is especially difficult for students who come from backgrounds associated with having less familiarity with how to acclimate to college life and all that it offers.
This reimagined effort will focus on the CALS "E3" initiative which focuses on experiential, engaged and entrepreneurial opportunities for students. This initiative will guide students upon arrival, provide career content in the curriculum and make the critical alumni and employer connections during their CALS experience. It will serve to remove the mysterious wrapping around building a resume through activities that are engaged, experiential, and entrepreneurial. We aim to make the process of building experiences less daunting for students, especially for those who may not be as comfortable approaching faculty or an advisor for this type of guidance. These meaningful experiences can increase a student's confidence, independence, and life trajectory. Our goals in CALS Student Services are to support the whole student experience by creating opportunities that are life changing, both on campus, in our community, and around the world. To do this we are reimagining traditional career services efforts and designing positions that will provide equitable support for all student career pathways by providing E3 support and programming.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate activities and events in a new CALS space designed specifically to enhance the College's E3 initiative and offer student support in a highly trafficked area in Mann Library. This role will manage the space and infuse opportunities for students to collaborate, create community, meet alumni and employers, and receive career support and guidance through programming designed to focus on experiential, engaged and entrepreneurial learning efforts. Programming will be delivered collaboratively with the student experience at the center of the efforts and will include consistent evening work to meet student availability.
- Responsibilities include developing, initiating, and overseeing CALSZone programs and events that will focus on career and experiential learning opportunities in this new student activity hub. Oversee entire use of the facility including scheduling, maintenance needs, program budget, catering and furniture needs.
- Create CALS community connections by engaging with CALS clubs and organizations to use the facility, create career interest communities, maintain a list of CALS clubs on the website and create engagement opportunities between CALS students and the CALS Dean.
- Manage and supervise student employees (CALS Peer Advisors) by providing ongoing oversight of their schedules, timecards, work projects, hiring and evaluation. Define and develop processes that allow the student employees to absorb basic and ongoing tasks that allows other professional staff to refocus their efforts on making career services equitable to all CALS Students. This includes creating a new electronic resume submission and review system that will be managed by the student employees.
- Create, offer, and evaluate ready-to-use career content focused on career exploration by mirroring and scaling CALS Zone programming to ensure all students can access these resources and opportunities. Increase the delivery and promotion of career development content and opportunities by creating short videos and record sessions that can be placed on Canvas or other learning platforms for asynchronous access. Offer creative learning opportunities that allow for exploration in CALS focused career pathways (agriculture, environment, food systems, etc..).
- Review and evaluate outcomes and data to assess the effectiveness of CALSZone programming objectives; determine adjustments and improvements needed to enhance programming and address gaps in service to student populations; report on program accomplishments and strategies for improvement.
- Work collaboratively with the CALS E3 team to create high impact career support, resources, and programming. Encourage and direct all students towards online asynchronous content; educate and empower faculty and staff who regularly connect with students with career knowledge and information; plan and launch activities facilitating connection with key career influencers and reserving one-on-one connections and specific advising topics for students unfamiliar with the career exploration processes.
- This position will work collaboratively with CALS Office of Academic Programs (OAP) teams; CALS majors and departments; numerous programs and units across campus and will have an ongoing connection to Cornell Career Services leaders, directors, and staff.
- Position success includes implementing and enhancing new approaches to support students' career planning that includes experiential learning opportunities. This will require working with team members and colleagues from across the college and university to provide opportunities to directly connect students with employers and alumni; help students understand the connection between skills, values, personality, and identity in career exploration; students will demonstrate knowledge of strategies for pathway mapping and the creation of a career plan, and they will express confidence regarding the next steps in the career development process.
